Questo racconto in due parti (il cui titolo originale era "La cedola di Mitja") fu scritto non prima del 1904, e fu pubblicato postumo nel 1911. E' stato giudicato una requisitoria contro il denaro, inteso come strumento di corruzione individuale e sociale. In realtà è molto più di questo: è la continuazione ideale del suo ultimo grande romanzo, Resurrezione, che si conclude con l'affermazione del potere di redenzione del Vangelo. Anche qui questo potere viene descritto e sostenuto, ancora più sottolineato dalla sua contrapposizione al potere di corruzione del denaro. E l' interminabile catena di eventi causati da un singolo peccato giovanile (la cedola di Mitja, appunto) si intreccia con una ben più potente catena di eventi originati dalla bontà, e da questa viene distrutta e trasformata.
