Publisher's Summary

When the 5,000-year-old djinni Bartimaeus is summoned by Nathaniel, a young magician's apprentice, he expects to have to do nothing more taxing than a little levitation or a few simple illusions. But Nathaniel is a precocious talent and has something rather more dangerous in mind: revenge. Against his will, Bartimaeus is packed off to steal the powerful Amulet of Samarkand from Simon Lovelace, a master magician of unrivalled ruthlessness and ambition. And before long, both djinni and apprentice are caught up in a terrifying flood of magical intrigue, murder and rebellion.

Set in a modern-day London controlled by magicians, this hilarious, electrifying thriller will enthral listeners of all ages.

What the Critics Say

"Steven Pacey's ebullient narration of Jonathan Stroud's The Amulet of Samarkand is a tour de force. Amulet is the first volume of a trilogy centred on the anarchic and enterprising djinni Bartimaeus, a powerful spirit whose experiences stretch back to Ptolemy, his favourite master. He is surprised to find himself summonded by Nathaniel, a precocious self-taught twelve-year old apprentice in magic... Stroud is a convincing manipulator of magic, and adults will enjoy the antagonistic alliance and perilous adventures as much as children will." (The Times)
"Drama, humour and hypnotically engaging storytelling." (The Independent)
"The truly original touch is the way Stroud alternates Nathaniel's story with the djinni's own knowing and irascible first-person narrative." (Guardian Review)
"The narrative slips skilfully from first person to third and back, and Bartimaeus's voice is laugh-out-loud sassy, while Nathaniel's story has an engaging poignancy as he tries to prove himself in a world in which he has always been despised." (Sunday Times)

    "Truly Magical"

I am a big fan of this whole trilogy and the audio version certainly does the book justice - you will not be disapointed with this one. Loved by children from 7 up and the parents too!

Imagine a world ruled by magicians deriving their power from their ability to control Djinn. The Sassy Djinni Bartimaeus is summoned by Nathaniel, a 12 year old apprentice. Very clever and thoroughly enjoyable mayhem ensues.

Highlights include cunning use of accepted mythology to enhance reality, superb characterisation, great villains and a very interesting sideways look at the recent past of Europe. Listeners will be delighted to learn that there is not a hint of Harry Potterness about this.

Even better is that there are two more books in the series which build on the plot very effectively.

You really want to download this!

Where does The Amulet of Samarkand rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I haven't listened to too many audio books but this one is awesome.

What about Steven Pacey’s performance did you like?

I felt like he captured the way Bartimaeus would talk, he was excellent to listen to.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed multiple times. Highly recommend this book for a good time.

    "Bartemais - I like him"

Downloaded this thinking it was more of a murder mystery - brilliant and I say that as a 50 something year old. Humour and good plotting have kept me going to and from work - I get a good 40 minutes of this excellent story, each way. In Waterstones, the book is in the 9-12 year old fiction shelf. Like the Simpsons, this works for any age.

"A great book for all the family"

We listened to this as a family on a 12 hour drive, and we were all entranced, kids and parents alike (the youngest is 8). Great story, well read and a pleasure. We're waiting for the next two stories from the trilogy.

    "Twisty!"

Was not sure what to expect when I tried this series out. Was delighted to find that it was really enjoyable. The series deals more with an Anti-hero that a hero, and for that reason will appeal to those that like series such as Artemis Fowl and Herbie Brennan's Faerie Wars. The characters are not shallow and manage to keep you intrigued through-out. Harry Potter fans may also enjoy this series.

I got this on the strength of the existing reviews and was really glad I had. I found the initial chapter a bit confusing but once I picked up the storyline I couldn?t stop listening! I am now on the second book of the trilogy and really enjoying it!

"Well performed and a great read"

This is a great reading of this book (which I have read a number of times before). Steven Pacey hits just the right note in his delivery of the characters, especially Bartimaeus, and slips between the various narrative styles seamlessly. I downloaded the other two in the series as well based on this and was not disappointed there either. I would certainly recommend this title.

I really enjoyed this audio book, especially with the wonderful narrator. Although i was disappointed to discover at the end that this is an abridged version - i prefer books as the author intended and worry i missed a brilliant experience!

    "Good story, excellent performance."
If you could sum up The Amulet of Samarkand in three words, what would they be?

    Intriguing, entertaining and different.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Amulet of Samarkand?

When the actions of the protagonist result in serious consequences for someone he cares for.

What about Steven Pacey’s performance did you like?

The performance was not overdone and the characters felt distinct. Mr Pacey conveyed the emotional state of the two main players bringing the scenes vividly to mind.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

A demon in the hand is worth two on your tail.

    Any additional comments?

The story started a little slow for me but near the end of the second chapter I found myself hooked. The pace is generally quite good and Stroud raises the stakes higher and higher. I have already bought the next in the series.

    "Good but missing its essence"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Amulet of Samarkand to be better than the print version?

This version though pleasant to listen misses out a huge part of the story. In the written version there are multiple foot notes on every other page the details of which are some of the most amusing and interesting bits of the story. Whilst the story still makes sense without the reading of the footnotes a lot of the world is left unexplained and much of the humor which is central to the trilogy is left out

Which character – as performed by Steven Pacey – was your favourite?

I found the voices of the main characters to be okay if not exactly as you might imagine them however he voiced many of the side characters excellently and overall was a great reading I enjoyed very much.

    Any additional comments?

A good listen still worthy of your attention however would recommend reading it yourself first if you haven't as a great many things are unfortunately left out due to format.
