Publisher's Summary

Supervillains do not merely play hooky.

True, coming back to school after a month spent fighting - and defeating - adult superheroes is a bit of a comedown for the Inscrutable Machine. When offered the chance to skip school in the most dramatic way possible, Penelope Akk can't resist. With the help of a giant spider and mysterious red goo, she builds a spaceship and flies to Jupiter.

Mutant goats. Secret human colonies. A war between three alien races with humanity as the prize. Robot overlords and evil plots.

Penny and her friends find all this and more on Jupiter's moons, but what they don't find are any heroes to save the day. Fortunately, they have an angry 11-year-old and a whole lot of mad science....

    "Step backwards for the story"
    Any additional comments?

I enjoyed the previous book. It was a story of children becoming teenagers and dealing with those kinds of things in a PG way. The awakening of their powers and puberty are clearly overlapping. I was expecting the gang to grow up more and develop some of the interesting characters that were introduced in book one. Instead we have cookie cutter new characters and forced sub-plots that build off of nothing from the previous book. It's like the whole cast was in a bubble. Almost no characters from the previous book are developed in this one. Even the main characters seem to freeze if not take a step back from their development.

On top of all the lack of character depth the story is incoherent. It jumps paragraph to paragraph with very little reason. purpose or transition. You will stop to go back 30 seconds to realize you missed nothing the story just abruptly changed for 'reasons'.

Given how much I enjoyed the first book, this is clearly a disappointing step backwards. I still give it a 3 out of 5. The narrator is excellent as well. I hope the next addition to this series improves.

    "What Happened!?!"
What could Richard Roberts have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

What happened to this book? I loved the first one and so couldn't wait to pick up this second book. Instead of continuing with what was started in book one, our villains are thrown into outer space with a completely bran new cast of characters. Sadly, there were so many that I found myself getting confused by who was who and why I should bather investing time in them or not.

I felt that this story did not flow as well. Having to rewind the story several times to make sure I did miss a segment or miss hear another took me out of the story. One of the new main characters was so screechy that I felt like I had to plug my ears when she was on.

Overall, I would not recommend this book to anyone and I am not even sure I will attempt the third book. Maybe in a couple months this book will have faded from my memory, but mostly, I think I will not be continuing. Which is sad, as I really thought that this author had something with the first book.

"fun, but not as good as the first."

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series, and had a lot of fun with this one too. The inscrutable machine runs rampant throughout, and most of her inventions are fun and interesting. If you like the first one I suspect you'll like this one. beware however, the author wanders a bit and didn't seem to have a complete plan until part way through the book. I still liked it.

"not as good as the first"

it's almost horrible from the start but the last hour of it saves it in my opinion Penny seems like a complete idiot almost right away but in the end she realized she was being stupid and found a way to fix things sorta overall it was a good book while I found the complete change of characters to be a bit confusing

Not as good as the first, rambled a bit. But quite imaginative, interesting mix of humans , aliens , and machines.

    "Sequel done wrong"

Never seen a story start and end at the same place this bad before. You could sum up the story in five sentences, trust me I did. The interpersonal relationships of our trio devolves and never shows back up. They are basically lead everywhere like fish on a line and only get in danger because of "plot" that would not have worked in the first.

    "Supers in Space"

Very Enjoyable. This time around we find them doing evil in space. This book is like collection of all the old radio serials about space mixed together. Like Flash Gordon with SteamPunk. Gives Nod to Bioshock. I'm looking forward to the next one.

    "Interesting series"

I really enjoyed the first book in this series. I like this one as well. My only negative is that I think it may have went on too long. Is definitely interesting if you're into this genre but at times I had trouble staying interested. If you like the first then give it a shot.

"grade A sci-fi and decent horror but..."

loved the inventions, and the horror scenes were skin crawling good. but you have to listen to a loooot of whining and dithering to pick out the good parts. be prepared to skip through the tedious introspection bits.
