Helpful characters try to steer her in every conceivable direction. Zaney learns, through the characters of Chick-a-Pea and Chick-a-Pod what genuine relationships are all about. She sails above her circumstances with Avis the Aviator, and is refreshed with a never-ending stream of lolly-water, which energizes her to face the world and carry on with her journey.
