Joe, an ugly and unloved horse, trusts no one, and no one trusts him. Until Vicky. This is the story of a troubled horse and the little girl who loves him.
Based on the true adventures of the author's childhood 50 years ago, Joe teaches the lesson that sometimes beauty is not skin deep but heart deep. That the unloved have much to show us about the true nature of love.

Absolutely! Dorothy reads this book with such pathos and understanding. Truly comes to life.
The moment the little girl sees Joe, and falls in love with him.
Both. Laughed out loud and cried buckets.
This is a great audio book. My very favorite.
The best so far
The whole book, brings back memories of my horse crazy childhood, sad when it was over I am sure I will listen to it again and again none
No, it is best done bit by bit so it can be enjoyed
"Loved this book"
Yes, loved the audio.
Deavers was the perfect choice as narrator
This was such a good book. Laughter and tears.... very touching story. Narrator top notch. I wish audible had the other books by Vicky Kaseorg. She writes beautifully.
"Wonderful heartfelt story"
I loved this story, its the story of hope and courage not only for Joe but for the heroine Vicky. Wonderful family story, a story for all ages....This is a book that should be a movie!!
Vicky, as shy young young girl, felt like a misfit. She overcomes thru perseverance and never giving up on herself!...and all though she may not describe it that way...that is exactly what she did.
her voice is so soothing and she reads with slight emotion that adds a nice quality
Don't consider myself religious in the least bit, but before her first horse show (on a particular horse) reading the inscription on "goldie" and breaking down the words and really applying them to the moment was very touching. As a horse lover and owner and always trying to "make the connection" this passage really applies in so many ways to horses, because its a partnership and you both have baggage..
I received the Audible version straight from the author. That in itself makes it special.
Of course, Vicky herself. I related to her so much with her love of animals, being a bit of a loner, and her determination.
Although she has a very pleasant voice, I thought there were times when she sounded a little sleepy and when I read the same lines in the book, I didn't hear "sleepy" at all. She slurs her words sometimes and I had to stop and back up 30 seconds to hear the line again because I didn't understand her. But that was minor in an otherwise fine performance on her part.
Without spoiling the story for anyone, the final chapter had me crying so hard I couldn't see.
I love a good "animal story", and this one goes down on my list of favorites of all time. Wonderful book, highly recommended.
awesome, outstanding, enjoyable
they all were, brought back memories of my childhood.
no this was my first
wanted to but had to wait till babies were sleeping
"A story everyone with a heart will enjoy!"
The story teller did a great job. I liked the audio because it reminds you that it is being told from a grown persons perspective. We are reminded that what happens to us in childhood, affects us later in life.
Vicky. I relate to her completely. I have experienced so many things that she did, even losing my horse.
She did a great job!
I am still crying!
Wonderful story no matter what age you are!
"Beautifully written and narrated!"
I loved it. I enjoyed the narrator also. What a wonderful, heartwarming and even funny story . A great book to add to my collection!
"IF YOU LOVE HORSES YOU'LL LOVE THIS :)"
I love this book. It is it a fresh first person account of a lonely little girl who befriends an angry, frightened, abused horse named Joe. Many of Vicky's childhood experiences remind me of mine. She was kindhearted and painfully shy.
Vicky shares it all, the fears, the foolishness, the embarrassing, inexplicable ways of childhood, the crazy fun, the pure joy of loving and being loved by a horse.
The narrator is so good I actually thought she was the author! When her voice breaks with emotion, it's clear that although many years have passed and sweet Joe is grazing in elysian fields, it's as if it all happened a moment ago. This is a perfect bedtime story. It'll leave your eyes moist and your heart glowing.
"A beautiful story"
This was a really sweet story. I truly enjoyed listening to it and will listen to it many more times.
