Publisher's Summary

A set textbook at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry since publication, Newt Scamander's masterpiece has entertained wizarding families through the generations. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is an indispensable introduction to the magical beasts of the wizarding world.

Scamander's years of travel and research have created a tome of unparalleled importance. Some of the beasts will be familiar to readers of the Harry Potter books – the Hippogriff, the Basilisk, the Hungarian Horntail... others will surprise even the most ardent amateur Magizoologist.

Narrated by Eddie Redmayne, this is the first audio book edition of Scamander's textbook ever to be released. Having starred as Newt Scamander himself in the movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, who better to narrate this Hogwarts Library book from one of the wizarding world's most famous Magizoologists? Eddie's film credits include The Danish Girl, My Week with Marilyn, Les Misérables and The Theory of Everything, for which he won a Golden Globe, an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award for Best Actor.

Dip in to discover the curious habits of magical beasts across five continents….

Please note: This A-Z textbook is enhanced for audio with original sound design. This audiobook includes "audio footnotes" which have been treated with a sound effect to differentiate them from the main narration.

15% of the proceeds* from this audiobook will be made available by the publisher to Comic Relief and Lumos Foundation for their work with children and young people to help them have a better life. 20% of these monies will be used by Comic Relief and 80% will be used by Lumos Foundation. A bit too short, might be missing some creatures I think. But it is thoroughly entertaining. I was disconcerted by the change in style with the notes using a crackling audio but got used to it during the book. Audio effects to set the scene were nice and helped gave varying character to the book. Eddie Redmaynes did a great job with the voice acting.

"A Textbook Plucked from Harry Potter's Backpack"

This was a good addition to the world of Harry Potter. Big fans of the book series will probably enjoy this book, but it's not really a story... If we were to pluck a textbook of magical creatures from Harry Potter's backpack, it would be this book.

This book reads just like a modern textbook, except this one is about magical creatures. Listed in alphabetical order, the book describes all of the magical creatures we read about in the Harry Potter books, as well as many we never really heard about.

The audio performance was very good, but I had some issues with the recording in some places...
Some of the creatures had "notes" that in a textbook would be something in the margin or at the bottom of the page. Though well performed, these "notes" were all of a different audio quality (almost muffled) than the rest of the narration. It as like the narrator went back and recorded the "note" sections while holding their hand over the microphone...

This was overall a very good listen. As a huge Harry Potter fan, this was a great addition to one of my favorite book series. 5 Stars!

    Any additional comments?

I snapped this up based on the title, assuming that it was the book version of the recent motion picture by the same name. I got about half way through it before I figured out that it was not going to get to the story. This is OK for what it is, a catalog of descriptions of magical creatures listed alphabetically, but I assume the print version has pictures that go along with the descriptions, which would be great.

A very disappointing buy. I thought his was the book, but instead it's a "textbook" to go with the screenplay. How confusing and misleading!

"Fun, Well Produced, And a Bit Short at Times"
    Any additional comments?

Overall (4.5) This was a fun, short diversion. I have always enjoyed side stories such as this especially when they are from worlds that I care about. It is well written and I really appreciate the consistency in presentation. Eddie Redmayne did a fantastic job narrating the book and the sound effects were top notch. I particularly enjoyed the little touch of having the authors notes sound like they were from a recorder.

With the top notch production values and narration my one gripe is that some beasts were too short. I would anxiously wait for the rating of each beast and then get excited for the "5x" ones only to have it over with in 20 seconds. Some parts were top notch such as the Lethifold where a story was told from a survivors perspective. I just wish there had been more moments like that. In the end, this was an enjoyable listen that I could easily come back to over and over again.

    "This is not a story"

This is not a story. It is a textbook with undertones of the adventures Newt took to collect the information. Each chapter corresponds to a letter in the alphabet. The introduction is the closest thing to a story and it only hints at Newt's adventure in NYC as detailed by the movie.

The reader is the actor who portrayed Newt in the movie. He has a great voice and does well with this. There are no voices to portray, so he does not need the same voice acting skills as other audible readers. His performance works well and he has a very soothing voice.

If you are a Harry Potter Fan this is a must listen to. Eddie Remayne did a great job and copy the inflections from his performance as Newt in the movie with the same name. This is not a novelization of the film but more supplementary to it.

    "Shards of Pottery!"

This "book" is probably a must for Potter completists.  However, it's worth mentioning that at the time of writing this review the linked Amazon reviews are a mixture of reviews about this book and the other books pertaining to "Fantastic Beasts" including the screenplay which could be confusing..

When you get a series as special as the Harry Potter books which captured the world's imagination it really makes sense to further explore the world and its artefacts and I'll admit to being a sucker for this kind of thing at times.  This does just that and unless you've been hiding under a philosopher's stone somewhere you'll already know that it isn't another book about Harry Potter himself.  Rather, it's one of the text books used at Hogwarts brought to life in some detail. Just for clarity then this is not the screenplay or even the story of the film, either of which would be rather excellent!.  This is primarily an A-Z of the magical creatures of the Harry Potter world.

Each creature is explained in turn including its Ministry of Magic classification.  There are various sound effects that add depth and at times amusing anecdotes about them.  The performance given by Eddie Redmayne is as you would expect given his acting talent and involvement with the film; very good. After all this is not a story per se but a text book upon which stories were built.  So it's not an easy one to read and get involved in as a narrator.

For a full credit it is of course a short book but given that so much of the proceeds are going to such worthwhile causes the whole thing makes sense for fans of Harry Potter who just want that little bit more of the magic.  I do think that the latest physical versions of the book may be a better option though.  I am a huge fan of audiobooks of course and often prefer the format to the written word but the beautiful presentation of the physical books and inclusions of extras such as handwritten notes purportedly by the characters means in this case the audiobook works less well for what is after all a reference book rather than a story.

"just a read list of species & distracting sounds"

I was hoping for a story like in the movie but it was just a read list of creatures that one mostly knew already from the Harry Potter books. On top there are distracting sound effects imitating quite poorly the beast in question, overriding the speaker and interupting the listening experience. As a big Potter fan and a fan of the film Fantastic beasts... I was expecting much more. Eddie Redmayne reads nicely though!

If you could sum up Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in three words, what would they be?

An interesting grouping of all the monsters that roam around in the Harry Potter world.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them?

I don't think there is a memorable moment but I really did like the added effects of the monsters in the background.

    Any additional comments?

This is a must listen for anyone who adores the Harry Potter world, it's a quick listen and the added effects really make this fun.
