Publisher's Summary

When Eragon finds a polished stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy; perhaps it will buy his family meat for the winter. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon soon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself.

Overnight, his simple life is shattered, and he is thrust into a perilous new world of destiny, magic and power. With only an ancient sword and the advice of an old storyteller for guidance, Eragon and the fledgling dragon must navigate the dangerous terrain and dark enemies of an Empire ruled by a king whose evil knows no bounds. Can Eragon take up the mantle of the legendary Dragon Riders?

The fate of the Empire may rest in his hands….

    "Great Book"

A fantastic read or rather 'listen' although the dragon voice was a little unsettling. All together both the Author and Gerrard Doyle did a great job.

    "FANTASTIC"
Would you consider the audio edition of Eragon: The Inheritance Cycle, Book 1 to be better than the print version?

I havn't read the print version so I would not know, but I have enjoyed the audiobook.

What did you like best about this story?

The story is edge of your seat, can't put down stuff. Its an excellent read and I unfortunately went through it way to quick, but I guess that;s the sign of a good book.

Have you listened to any of Gerrard Doyle’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I've listened to the entire series narrated by Gerrard, I couldn't imagine the characters any other way. My only issue was Sephera (a girl dragon) sounding so manly however I soon grew to love it so once I got past that it was great.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Lots of laughter not so many tears in this one but the rest of the series will make you laugh cry cheer and rejoice!

    Any additional comments?

    An excellent book, narrated perfectly!

    "Eragon"

Eragon part 1 had the best beginning to a story I've ever read! In my opinion, the best part is when an Urgal corners Eragon and he uses the magic word "Brisingr" to save himself.

"Inspired by those who came before."
Would you listen to Eragon - Part One again? Why?

I quite enjoyed the story and loved the narration by Gerrard Doyle.

What did you like best about this story?

Sooooo much better than the movie. A good start to what appears to be a great Fantasy series.

Which character – as performed by Gerrard Doyle – was your favorite?

Loved the portrayal of Brom, loved the character in the movie as portrayed by Jeremy Irons (a most underutilised actor) and it was great to see him fleshed out in the book and greatly portrayed by Gerrard.

    Any additional comments?

The story and so many things in this book are obviously inspired by Tolkiens' works, but done with a obvious love of the original source and with just the right spin to make it his own world, an incredible feat for any author let alone a 16 year old novice (I believe that's how old Mr Paolini was when he finished Eragon).I look forward to sharing this book with my children as they grow older as it is a fine addition to anyone who loves Dragons and the bond they can have with their riders.

I wonder if Anne McCaffrey ever read Eragon?

"Eragon - a favourite story comes to life"
Would you listen to Eragon - Part One again? Why?

Yes, this is an audio book I will listen to over and over again as well loved characters come to life. Gerrard Doyle has a beautiful voice and the life he instills in his characters makes thems so much more real - and there are quite a few.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed how you share Eragons journey from simple farm boy to Dragon Rider and I love Saphira's development and the sense of humour and possessiveness she has for Eragon. The whole world that you are introduced to, the magic, elves, dwarfs, dragons and intrigues are thoroughly enjoyable.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The scene where Saphira and Eragon drink too much mead and Saphira belches a huge flame before passing out

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Come and experience the re-birth of a legend and one man's journey from innocent farm boy to fierce Dragon Rider

    Any additional comments?

The movie that was made would have been a huge success if the film makers had stayed true to the characters in the book. It's the reason the Harry Potter and Twilight transition from book to film was so successful - the films stayed true to the characters and story lines whereas with Eragon the characters in the film had, at best, only a vague resemblance to the detailed descriptions of the characters in the book (& Arya looked nothing like her description in the book) and, if you had not read the books, the film made no sense at all

"Why split the book into two?"

I enjoyed the book, but why split it into two? I have read plenty of books longer than this that are not split at a place where you have to buy the second half. Is this a money spinner audible?

"Great start - shame they split the book in two !"
Would you listen to Eragon: The Inheritance Cycle, Book 1 - Part 1 again? Why?

I think the story is engaging and it has elements that mean you could listen to it over and over.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Eragon the central character is growing and learning and does not get dull

What about Gerrard Doyle’s performance did you like?

Gerrad Doyle's performance overall is good; characters sound different and speech is clear.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

There is already a film to this book which I have seen before getting the audio book and so far they are very different, but I am enjoying it.

    Any additional comments?

I don't like the fact the books are split into two parts! There are longer books un-split!

    "Great but..."

I really love this book. The story is told well but the voice used for the dragon is a bit obnoxious. It's all gurggly like someone who's smoked too much. I understand the perspective the narrator was going for and I can get over the annoying dragon voice because the story is just that wonderful. It's the kind of story you can really get wrapped up into and really makes you want to find out what happens next.

    "Narrator fine"

I just wanted to comment with respect to Helen's review that I found the narrator to be fine. Perhaps he reminds her of someone she doesn't like! Yes, occasionally there is some petulence, but just as much there is wonder, innocence, excitement etc etc.
I bought this book in two parts as there doesn't appear to be any other option in the UK for the unabridged audio.

    "An excellent performance"

I have enjoyed reading this story many times and decided to purchase it to listen to during long car journeys or runs. Gerrard's performance is excellent, though it took a while to get used to the range of purely British accents (mainly English and Scottish) which previously I hadn't imagined.

My one critique was the voice he chose to use for Saphira - the affected gravelly rumble was rather irritating, even though I appreciate he was attempting to be a dragon, my mind still protests that she was a female dragon, and didn't need the throaty, deep rasp portrayed. .

Overall an excellent performance, and the critiques are only from someone who has dearly loved this story for many years as a reader, not a listener.

    "Just the Saphira voice"

This is my favourite book series and the reader does an excellent job of capturing the characters. All except for Sahara. Her voice is terrible though he gets her character. It gets easier to listen to after a while but it put me right off the first time I listened. It's a shame the Kerry Shale version is abridged otherwise I'd recommend that one over this one as his voice acting is very well done.

"Paolini is a Genius - An All Time Favourite"

I've loved the Inheritance books since my teens and have re-read them many times. The audiobook is amazing and Gerard Doyle is fantastic. So glad he stayed with the series for the other three.

Eragon is an amazing book, full of thoroughly absorbing characters, a rich universe and an edge-of-your-seat story. If you were at all put off by the film, rest assured it is a terrible representation and should not even be compared to the book of the same name. Completely different and the series is so much better. In fact, the 'movie' is an absolute embarrassment to fans and the author.

Give it a go and guaranteed you will fall in love!
