Publisher's Summary

Darkness falls.... Despair abounds.... Evil reigns….

Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have just saved the rebel state from destruction by the mighty forces of King Galbatorix, cruel ruler of the Empire. Now Eragon must travel to Ellesméra, land of the elves, for further training in magic and swordsmanship, the vital skills of the Dragon Rider. It is the journey of a lifetime, filled with awe-inspiring new places and people, each day a fresh adventure. But chaos and betrayal plague him at every turn, and Eragon isn't sure whom he can trust.

Meanwhile, his cousin Roran must fight a new battle back home in Carvahall - one that puts Eragon in even graver danger.

Will the king's dark hand strangle all resistance? Eragon may not escape with even his life....

    "Poor narrating"
What disappointed you about Eldest - Part One?

The narrator. The story is brilliant!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Saphira, but the Narrator killed her voice. It is supposed to be nice and pleasant sounding voice yet he gives her a gravely throat cancer voice which made me cringe every time she had a vocal line.

Would you be willing to try another one of Gerrard Doyle’s performances?

    No!!

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Eldest - Part One?

    N/a

    "Worth a listen"

Not the most sophisticated of its genre but worth a go

Not to sure about the narration - some strange use of uk dialects and for some reason the Dragons all sound like Daleks from Dr Who...

    "As good as the first"

As good as the first book, but I found myself more interested in Eragon’s cousin Roran, than Eragon himself.

    Story – 4/5

Christopher Paolini has expanded nicely on the first story by having two separate story arc’s, Eragon and his cousin Roran. Personally, I thought Roran’s arc was more enjoyable. Eragon’s part, up until the final battle at the end was a tad boring in my opinion, but was probably necessary in order to develop his character ready for the remaining 2 novels

I can’t help but think CP was a bit over indulgent in his fascination with the way the Elves live, utilising a lot of historical writings on Elven mythology, and adding some of his own elements to give the reader a very detailed view of their way of life. I am sure a lot of readers would find this part more enjoyable than I did though.

Once again, the whole book lifted in quality towards the end, where there was yet again another well written battle, even larger and more exciting that the one in the first novel.

    Performance – 4/5

As with the first novel, Gerrard Doyle did a great job; each character’s voice was distinctive, and the tone of the story was portrayed very well.

He suits this type of story nicely, but I can not see him narrating a gritty, more adult novel like Game of Thrones very well at all, so if I find him narrating a novel I am considering, I will be careful about the type of story it is before purchasing.

    Overall – 4/5
