Publisher's Summary

From the brilliant and innovative head of Google's people operations, the ultimate guide to attracting the most spectacular talent to your business and how to ensure the best and the brightest succeed.

Google receives more than 1,500,000 unique applications for jobs every year. This book shows you why.

  • How to learn from your best employees - and your worst
  • Why you should hire only people who are smarter than you are
  • Take away managers' powers over employees
  • And why not to trust your gut instinct?

"We spend more time working than doing anything else in life. It's not right that the experience should be so demotivating and dehumanizing." So says Laszlo Bock, visionary head of people operations at the company that transformed how the world interacts with knowledge. This insight is the heart of his brilliant first book. A compelling manifesto with the potential to change how we work and live,

Work Rules! offers both a new philosophy of the new world of work and a blueprint for attracting the most spectacular talent and ensuring that the brightest and best prosper. Your workplace and how you treat your employees have huge effects on your success.

In twelve vivid chapters, Bock lays out a series of surprising lessons from a range of industries - from household names to little-known innovators. He also takes us inside one of history's most explosively successful businesses to reveal why Google is consistently rated one of the best places to work in the world. His years of experience are distilled into a series of entertaining principles that are easy to put into action, whether you're a team of one or a team of thousands.

Work Rules! shows how to strike a balance between creativity and structure, leading to success you can measure in quality of life as well as market share. Listen to it to build a better company from within rather than from above; listen to it to reawaken your joy in what you do. The way we work is changing - are you?

"Great book. Really resonated with me."

Great engaging book read well. I work for a fortune 500 and gave me some insight to the quirky things our global HR team get up to. Saw the value in what they did at Google. How fortune 500's try to clone it, but fail in the execution and the essence of what they did at google.

"Inspired me to ditch my high paid job in Design and pursue a job in People Operations"

Beautifully sums up how Google operate from a People Operations perspective distilling some complex data into the fundamental idea that people are essentially good, and we should treat people accordingly.

    Story
"Great insights into a fascinating company"

Insights from inside the people operations at Google. How to attract, hire, motivate, retain or even disseminate great people from one of the world's most innovative companies. Lots of valuable insights for any managers, creators, and team members. How must your people-oriented policies relate to and reinforce your mission and vision as a company or institution? Lots of practical and sensible advice, wisdom, humour and intelligence distilled over the years.

Wish many of the "leaders"and managers I've met during my career had thought (and acted....) in tune with even a fraction of these insights...

    Story
"Great book will make you think about HR/people"
If you could sum up Work Rules! in three words, what would they be?

    "thought prevoking", challenging and interesting

What did you like best about this story?

The fact that a range of real life scenarios are used to back up the concepts and that whilst the "sell" is that "this is what Google does" the examples are from smaller businesses too.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

    NA

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No typical business book you read take in apply and come back to it

    "Disapointing"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I don't know, I work in this kind of environment so I don't find it inspiring since I already understood lot of the things that happen in this book in my office.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The fact that they only hire top talent based on their reputation.

How could the performance have been better?

The performance wasn't the issue. The material was very standard for a tech company and it just showed throughs.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    disappointment

    Any additional comments?

I have worked i startup, mega cooperation as a coder/programer and an operation engineer. Devops manager now and quiet frankly this is now standard in our industry. Guess the book was great before most of the idea's were well known in the industry, however now I would be surprised if they weren't.
