"Gerber loves to exhort people to develop powerful visions for their companies." (Fortune)
This book is good for people who don't have a clue about business, structure or organising their live.It is not good for people who have managed, know business skills or looking for an insight to gain an edge.
I didn't find it interesting.
However this may be because I have an MBA and I have been a part of similar coaching Hubbard Management programs which I was not impressed with.
I have found the Hubbard Management system not to be in line with my beliefs or personal practices.
Some people may really respond to this story and the way they tell allegorical tales to illustrate the point.
The good key takeaway is build your business to sell, OR just be happy being employed.
The speaker told the tale well - reminded me of the old "read-along story time" voice actors. Great voice for radio. very nostalgic.
Focus on systems and reread my MBA notes on McDonalds and the franchise theory. There are better books out there for "franchise" models and building a business to sell which is the underlying theme of the book.
This book is not a bad book, I would recommend this to people who have read business books before or have any training in management. It is a great segue into understanding you don't know much about running a business. Maybe look to investing in an MBA or getting a business coach.
Loved this book. It's incredibly inspiring, but it's not just about mindset - there's lots of actionable items within the book so you can take action and improve your small business and your life.
This book could be a quarter of the size if the overly emotional narratives and alliteration were removed. There are a few bits of helpful wisdom in there but one needs to wade deep through some heavy drivel.
What a great book to listen to when I was feeling how I was feeling, which was totally disenchanted about my career and unmotivated to do anything about it. This book gave me the kick up the butt that I needed to change my life. It has lifted the haze and made me realise how different things can be. I want to press play and listen to it all over again but I can't, I have a business to build!!!
Found the book contained many "aha" moments that once implemented will make a radical difference. Just a matter on looking outside the technical perspective and seeing the whole picture. Parts of the storyline did lose my interest but I am stoked I stuck with it until the end. Well worth the read.
"Life Changing, I Gotta Say"
I had heard about this book for years, but Gerber's writing style, with its endless dependent clauses, bothered me. However, when I got the audio book, and heard him reading it, and got the way it was meant to be taken in, I got it.
This book has radically helped me in the past month and a half since I read it, and dramatically changed how I look at my (*CURRENTLY*) one-person business. I cannot recommend this book enough to those of you who started a small business without any entrepreneurial training or experience.
"Ideas to build a life, not just a business"
This book is helping me understand how a clear vision for my life and new business will help me accommodate changing markets, staff roll over, and evolving partnerships. E-Myth has changd my perspective and goal -- to develop an enterprise with a clear mission, and to plan this business to thrive without me.
"Saved my Life"
I am a small business owner just like the woman he describes in the book. After listening for 20 minutes I felt hope for my business, by the end of the book I had a plan in action to turn that hope into prosperity. This book saved my business and my sanity.
"Well worth the download"
I cannot understand why there are negative comments for this book - it is one of the better foundational books for any small business person who wants their life back. I highly recommend it.
"E-Myth Revisited Review"
Excellent read and recommend listening to it once a year. Challenges small business owners to work yourself out of your job and to delegate. In order to build a self sufficient company with total freedom, one must develop systems that the "least" qualified employee in your organization can follow. It's all about the SYSTEMS in your company.
"A must have business book."
I was going into this book with apprehension, a fear that this was yet another "I'll show you how it is done and you will live a great life forever". But I decided to buck the critic on audible who said it was awful and got it. Well I was surprised. It gives you the basics on running a business, a department, or anything...really. It shows you some of the obvious things that you never think about and then allows you to expand on them for yourself. It's a book that I have read a number of times...well listened to, but the first that I took notes on. E-Myth Mastery is next.
"Must have/Life changing book"
This book was *very* good. It's perfect for people who want to start a business. The author's narration was easy to listen to and really made the listening experience enjoyable.
"Must listen for would be entrepreneurs"
The audiobook is a bit too long. The stories about Sara's problems are a bit too long and too emotional at the first sight. However, when you look closer, you realize the story is about someone like you. If you try to think like Sara, the main character, it is about life and meaning of life. Then, you understand the real substance of what the author is transmiting using an emotional story. There is knowledge inside: how to start a business; how to not be consumed by your business; how to balance business with life; how to grow; how to be successful etc.
It is the true substance of the book that made me to upgrade from 3 to 4 stars.
"Wow! Does this guy know me?"
I couldn't believe this book. It seemed like the author had a hidden camera into my life and my business. He knew everything about me! As he went through the stages of a new business, it was like as if he were telling my life story. His suggestions were timely and relevant. His methods were clear and easy to follow. I found this book to be particularly exciting and motivational. He reawakened the vitality in me that I had when I initially started my business. And most importantly, this book made me realize that my business ups and downs were not unique, and gave me hope that there was a way out. This is a perfect read for someone in the small, then big, then small again place in their business. However, I imagine it is relevant at any point in the growth of a small business. Hopefully you will read this book early so you can avoid some of the pitfalls he describes and I have already experienced. This is a MUST READ for any small business owner.
"Attitude changing but no practical solutions"
This book illustrates business ideas through a story between a teacher and a student, much like that of The Goal. But the author put too much effort into developing the characters and too little into teaching the business. There were lots on how Sarah smiles, and grins, and have the looks of someone on the verge of enlightenment, and on and on. There were lots on describing the pitfalls of the average business owner. But there were very little on solutions to solve these problems and almost no examples given to demonstrate how to apply the solutions in practical situation in day to day business.
The idea is to set up your business in a way you can put everything about the business in an operations manual. You need to do it in a way such that if someone else was given the manual, he/she will be able to run the exact same business. This way, your business will have repeatable and predictable results. If you were on vacation, someone else will be able to run the business with same results. The author spent may be 20 minutes on illustrating these ideas, and the rest of the 8 hours describing how excited Sarah became hearing these.
If you'd like to read about the touchy feelys, pick up a real novel. If you want to have practical ideas about how to run a business, pick up a real business book. If you'd like to spend 8 hours learning the ideas I've already outlined above, get this book.
"Small business owners - you must listen to this!"
We all get bogged down in the doing. This book explains why and what to do about it.
No, because you need to ponder the ideas being suggested. It's better to listen to a chapter, think and then move on. But you also want to go back and listen to it again.
"3rd time of reading, 1st time of listening."
A super business book.
If you run a small business as I do, read this book as it'll give you a reality check.
This audible version is easily the best format for this very worthwhile book.
Very sound advice for anyone running their own business.
"Insightful. The ideas behind the success of a small business. Your business."
A must read for all small businesses starting out and for those small businesses that have become all consuming and overwhelming. This book will give you the ideas needed to enable you to set up your business in the best possible way. Working on your business not in your business. Setting up the systems at the outset so that your business does not become another job, but once set up, allows you the freedom to live the life of your choosing.
"Every small business owner should listen"
This is a great book for small business owners. I run a number of businesses and advise many others (not as part of Emyth Worldwide, I should add!) and the themes covered in this book, the systems and processes it introduces are excellent. The only reason it isn't 5* is because the story is a little too sickly at times and the narration is too slow (like so many narrators). I listened on 1.25x to make it sound normal!
"Keep this one thought in mind from start to finish:"
Are you in Business to make "pies" or in the Business of making "pies"?
Substituting "pies" for whatever product, service or solution you offer or intend to offer.
If by the end of the book you understand the fundamental difference between "in Business to" and "in the Business of" you'll be able to decide if you should start or be running a Business.
Sometimes the most powerful ideas are the simplest propositions.
I thank Michael for having written the book, am grateful to have stumbled upon it and wholeheartedly recommend it as a core tenant to any potential or existing Business owner.
"Wasn't what I expected. Truly learned a lot"
The story about Sarah going through the process was a very easy as related way for me to understand all the lessons that Gerber was trying to instill in her. All other examples were useful and again very easy to visualise in the context of my own business. Very happy I finally "read" this.
"Great audiobook !"
Amazing! Easy to understand ,simple descriptions .
Good for all levels in business , if you want to start a business or if you are advanced!
"Stunning piece of work!"
For a startup entrepreneur like me this book is God sent. It left with an MBA in entrepreneur that's the feeling right now.
Worth every penny even for anyone in business hoping to built a success system, this book shows you how 👌🏾
"Absolute critical book for any business owner"
This bar far out ranks any other business book - fact
This book only has 2 characters - the student (business owner) & the experienced coach
Clarity & depth of all building blocks required but narrated in a way that the story & questions are deliberate to enhance education
The Only New Business Story You'll Ever Need
Buy It - multiple times value in return
"don't run a small business but lots of takeaways"
Michael tells a great story in this book. I assume that the situation with all about pies client was staged as a way to make the actions in this book more personal. it worked. I've read the chimp paradox as well about the 3 personas of the mind. Michael seemed to translate this very well with the 3 personas going on in a founders head in the business world.
