Publisher's Summary

Faced with a software project of epic proportions? Tired of over-committing and under-delivering? Enter the dojo of the agile samurai, where agile expert Jonathan Rasmusson shows you how to kick-start, execute, and deliver your agile projects. Combining cutting-edge tools with classic agile practices, The Agile Samurai gives you everything you need to deliver something of value every week and make rolling your software into production a non-event. What the Critics Say

"This book is very well written. Rasmusson uses an entertaining writing style that makes it pleasant to read from beginning to end. What I like the most is the author experience. The way he presents the topics dealing with role assignation (chapter 2) and reality in agile planning (chapter 8) is simply remarkable." (Computing Reviews)

    "Great Primer!"

An outstanding audio adaptation of the whirlwind tour of agile software development. A great companion for someone with a long commute between the serenity of home and the chaos of a development shop struggling to find its place with an agile process.

    "Short intro to everything Agile"

The book summarizes and jetskis through all the agile/scrum work methodology and cycles. However, it should be listened at 1.5x speed, otherwise it feels like Don is sedated.

This book goes way past the standard definition and artifacts of scrum and introduces methods from lean as well s the authors experience that aren't in any other book that I know of.

    "Agile is a mentality"
What did you love best about The Agile Samurai?

It is one of the best introductions to the Agile mentality that I have come across. Breaking things down to simple understandable pieces without giving so much detail that you want to vomit while listening.

What did you like best about this story?

Presents the ideas in a very approachable manner, follow's them up with example from real life experience, then finishes with a hypothetical.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    Agile is a mentality

    "Good primer"

This book is a good primer for Agile and plenty of references to other books to dive in on a particular area of agile. The book is good on its own, however if you only wanted the book so that you had a list of other books to read for a broader and deeper understanding it is also good in that regard.

"Thorough, practical, light intro to Agile"
    Any additional comments?

A good little primer on Agile, with lots of practical tips and 'war stories'. The narration is perfect for the subject matter (I didn't mind the slight cheesiness of the "dojo" bits!) but I mostly sped it up to 1.25x as it was a little slower than I like.
I really liked that it addressed principles for development teams such as refactoring code, continuous integration, unit testing etc - I am not a developer but I it was explained in a way that a non-dev could understand it.

"Good foundation, no need for Mr. Miyagi (the dojo)"

The core principles and techniques of agile are clearly expressed here, albeit at a fairly rudimentary level...but a great intro/primer audiobook.

The book is structured to allow for easy re -visitation of specific techniques covered in the book.

My only issue with the book is the incredibly cheesy (well at least for my tastes) visits to the "Agile Master" in his dojo, I understand they are an attempt to recap the chapter in a conversational way, however it comes across as either condescension or hyperbole.

    I would certainly recommend.

    "Not much on automation"

It's a good book but needs more on automation. Test automation and techniques like continuous integration are underpinning factor to large scalable projects in agile. Without it the team can't get through regression testing and code can't be checked in frequently.

    "Excellent overview of Agile"
If you could sum up The Agile Samurai in three words, what would they be?

    Solid introductory giude

    Any additional comments?

If you are looking for your first book on Agile or if you have some level of experience, but you would like to re-enforce the principals and the practical application of them then this is a great book. It gives lots of examples and isn't biased towards a particular flavour of Agile although it does mention Scrum and XP more than anything else. The chapter on the Inception Deck is particularly powerful.
