I have listened to it a few times. I am a freelancer, so a micro-business, and I find that as I become more experienced, I glean new gems from this book.
The need for a good lawyer.
He's pretty funny and sarcastic. A nice mix.
Not really. It's good to think about some of the advice he mentioned before moving onto the next section.
Listening to this audiobook led me to a presentation by Mike called "F&*k you, pay me," which can be googled. It's a gem.
author of The Leaky Funnel
Mike's heart is 100% in the right place. Whilst this book may hold limited appeal for those with established and successful businesses, it is perfect for creatives yet to transition from hobby to business, and likely to not be earning fair rent on their labour.
"Brilliant, bright and extremely useful."
Mike tells it like it is. Here's how to sport a healthy web / design business. His advice is sound and valid. I agree a 100% with him, as it's the way I've run my own business and dealt with clients since I started in 2009. It's what has made my business profitable and stable while some of my "best" competitors have burnt their noses on bad clients, big projects that drag on forever, doing too much free work due to lack of clear scope at project initiation etc etc etc.
He gives great advice on how to deal with problematic clients, how to charge, what to charge, what to look out for, how to work with freelancers, and more. Well, basically it's how to deal with all the stuff most web / designers struggle with.
I have already recommended this book to three people, all of whom I know will benefit greatly from it. One of them has already praised it as much as I do.
It's extremely useful and to the point.
"A must read for all designers"
Great take always.
The most importants ones for me today:
- When the budget is low: meet the budget by narrowing the scope, not changing your processes (e.g. Dropping research)
- When writing a client contract: Intellectual Property transfers on full payment
- When hiring: tell them honestly where you think their skills are today and where they should be in 6 months
"Loved it ! Working and aspiring designers BUY IT !"
Im a working designer and illustrator but although I wished that I could attend school and get a degree I was not able to do so in my young adult years. There is priceless info in here that experience with big clients is the only school for alot of the info in this book. Great details and great narrator. Mike is a smart and skilled man.
Worth every penny for any designer. Few people have the experience that Mike does and even fewer have written a detailed and entertaining book about it. I have shared it with as many of my designer and illustrator friends. :)
I loved how hones it was. It was very convicting to hear about the responsibilities of a designer. I learned about mistakes I didn't even know I was making.
First Mike Monteiro book for me.
Must read for any designer, especially those that freelance, on any scale.
"Professional and personal"
The book changed how I look at my work and myself as a professional. Mike is also a terrific speaker and elevates his text by performing it in his signature style.
"Excellent practical advice. Now go do the thing."
I have no regrets purchasing this audiobook. Honestly, I purchased this book on somewhat of a lark while looking for books on aesthetics and critical analysis (I know, I'm a nerd), but as a book sharing practical advice from the biographical standpoint of the author's experience I am very pleased to have found to-the-point advice that can benefit many kinds of entrepreneurs (though designers should pay close attention).
"A joy to listen to and learn from."
As of this date when I writing this review, I have listened to this book in its entirety twice. Hard lessons delivered in the kindest manner possible. A must-read for every creative professional in my opinion. Thank you.
"Best design book out there."
When it come to design business books, I have read them all. This is the one I keep re-reading over and over again. I also send this to every designer friend as a gift.
To you, Mike, for being a formidable person. You have improved my life and that of those around me. I offer you my sincerest gratitude.
"Really Great Read."
Thank you. This has really improved my view on design and design practice. Um Fin....
"How all audio books should be"
Great advice for all designers new and not so new. Narrated in a very entertaining and enjoyable way
"Essential reading for designers and design managers"
Absolutely essential reading for anyone working in design - a life of lessons learnt so you don't have to do it the hard way too
"This will make you cry"
Solid, honest and entertaining.
Good read for newbies and veterans :-)
( Probably something you should give to your boss to read )
"Good book for anyone who is a designer"
A good source of information on being or becoming a successful designer. A nice short book that doesn't waffle on with all that pointless stuff.
"Designers need to get this..."
Great to see Mike making the leap to audio book. It would be awesome to see more of the A Book Apart series as audiobooks! :)
"Straight from the Mule"
Great listen! Mike gets right to the point on many, if not all the challenges designers, or anyone really, needs to address to succeed in doing a great job and feeling good about it.
"Great for all designers"
If you started in design this will help you tremendously. All of this sounded like something my mentor would say. It's fun to listen to too
"very informative, easy to listen to, funny in part"
very informative, easy to listen to, funny in part.
highly recommended for solo practitioners / small design businesses.
"incredible advice, start to finish."
Brilliant book. Just what I needed. Full of laughs and brilliant advice. A must read for anyone in the business of design; for both the designer and the clients. Absolutely essential for new designers 👌
"Web Designers Need to Know"
This book really covers how to get the most out of being a Web Designer.
