Written with her trademark deadpan humour, Urzila's memoir is full of great stories about both the big things in life and the little things. Urzila's accidental beginning in stand-up has led to an incredibly successful career in comedy, with regular gigs on television as well as sell-out shows in comedy festivals across New Zealand and Australia. But life hasn't always been a bundle of laughs. Urzila talks candidly about her childhood with a great family, apart from her abusive dad, and about growing up in South Africa.

Truths from an Unreliable Witness is a fiercely honest and wryly funny memoir of melancholy, love, marriage, the loss of love and marriage, homelessness, of hotel rooms strewn with empty mini-bar bottles of vodka, of waking from a two-week coma, of putrid drug dens and using a jungle to confront yourself. It is about hitting rock bottom and then realising you are only halfway down. Ultimately, it's about hanging on to your last straw of sanity and finding laughter in the darkest of times. You may want to sit down for this....

Like most of us, Toni Lodge tells little white lies all the time. Whether it's "I'm five minutes away" or "It must have gone to my spam folder", most of these innocent fibs are harmless. But what if you realised that you weren't just lying about the little things, but the big "life" stuff too? When Toni sat down to write this memoir, she realized that the lies she was telling herself were hiding some pretty important home truths—about her work, her identity and her mental health. In her dogged pursuit of these truths, she brazenly explores everything.

Four year old's might not be able to articulate questions or understand a lot, but the ache of absence is very real. Year after year that ache persisted. Shanelle's father, Chris Dawson, claimed that his wife just needed to get away. This is what he told Lyn's parents and siblings. This is what he told his daughters. But Lyn never returned home.

Well hello to you dear audiobook browser. Now I have your attention it would be rude if I didn't tell you a little about my literary feast. So, here is the thing: is it just me or does anyone else find that adulthood offers no refuge from the unexpected horrors, peculiar lack of physical coordination and sometimes unexplained nudity, that accompanied childhood and adolescence? I am proud to say I have a wealth of awkward experiences - from school days to life as an office temp - and here I offer my 18-year-old self (and I hope you, too, dear listener) some much needed caution and guidance on how to navigate life's rocky path.

Publisher's Summary
So Judith decided it was time to write the full story of her parents and her childhood. And here it is, a reference book on all things Lucy from: A is for Adoption (she is) to C is for Cleaning (they didn't) and for Counselling (you'll find out why she had a lot of it) to D is for Diets (she was put on one at eight) to H is for Heart Attack (her father's) to M is for Make Up (her father's) to N is for Nuts (there was a falling out over testicles) to R is for Review (to do with Nuts) to T is for Tanscendental Meditation (it didn't work) to X is for Xmas (when a lot of this started) and beyond...
In amongst the gags Judith explores the people her parents were and the impact of finding out - 25 - that she was adopted. We meet Judith's birth mother but learn that ultimately it was her very unusual parents who made her who she is today.
The Lucy Family Alphabet is funny and ruthlessly honest, but also a moving tribute to the lunatics who raised one of Australia's best-known comedians.

Revealing and memorable
This was the first book of Judith's I'd come across. I'm not even sure why I bought it - I like her work, but this was an impulse buy I guess.
Lot's of comedians and media personalities talk or write about their personal and family histories being dysfunctional. Most of them aren't even in the ballpark of the Lucy family. The stories in this book aren't just illustrations of family trauma, they stay in your mind as the specifics are just so unfathomable and sometimes surreal.
All of that said, it isn't just a shopping list of 'listen to this crazy story about my family', they weave together to tell a good story and give a snapshot of how a person adapts and re-orients themselves after a troubled upbringing. Moreso, the narrative is hilarious at times which doesn't belittle the stories, but does make the act of getting through the book a little less bleak than it might have been in the hands of a lesser writer.
Recommended - I've read a number of books with a vaguely similar theme, but the vivid and strange characters and situations in this one stuck with me as they are often so neurotic and vividly depicted. A good balance runs through the book and I think the reflections in it are really worth reading no matter what your own family experience consisted of.
