Tracey Spicer was always the good girl. Inspired by Jana Wendt, this bogan from the Brisbane backwaters waded through the 'cruel and shallow money trench' of television to land a dream role: national news anchor for a major network. But the journalist found that, for women, TV was less about news and more about helmet hair, masses of makeup and fatuous fashion in an era when bosses told you to 'stick your tits out', 'lose two inches off your arse', and 'quit before you're too long in the tooth'. Still, Tracey plastered on a smile and did what she was told. But when she was sacked by email after having a baby, this good girl turned 'bad', taking legal action against the network for pregnancy discrimination.
In this frank and funny 'femoir' - part memoir, part manifesto - Tracey 'sheconstructs' the structural barriers facing women in the workplace and encourages us all to shake off the shackles of the good girl.

Good girl grows into inspiring woman
I started listening to Tracey's story with a blend of horror and shame as I was shocked by some of her experiences of sexism but also angry at how she went along with it and ashamed as I recognised and remembered the same kind of experiences in my own life and the way I was complicit in my own oppression at times. But as I journeyed with Tracey into her story I found myself cheering and laughing and applauding as she grew into this advocate for the rights of all women, including her own. I enjoyed the way she punctuated her story with the news of that time, which helped me recall where and who I was then too. Highly recommended and very relatable for me!

Inspiring story of women triumphing at work
A thought provoking story full of nostalgia I could relate to of growing up in Australia in the 70's and 80's.

Life changing.
Three quarters of the way through this book I found myself holding my own in front of a crowd I would normally have found intimidating and confronting. my voice shook, but I said my piece anyway. Thank you Tracey for making me feel it was ok to have the courage.

Funny, honest and therapeutic
I feel so much better for having experienced this book. I’m so grateful for Tracey speaking out - it makes it easier for other women, and she does it in such a funny and honest way. She’s lived a fascinating life and is using her power in so many positive ways. It’s a book for men as well as women. Insights and laughs for everyone. Loved it!!

Striping back the folly & injustice of misogny
Tracey delivers an engaging, funny & eye opening look at her personal experience challenging the 'dinosaurs' of mainstream news media. Sadly the indignities she faced turn out to be almost universal & so the almighty battle begins for real change to create cultures that value women for more than their perceived sexual availability to certain type of men. Go Tracey!

Every chapter is fantastic.
A great life. A great story. And a great commentary on sexual harassment and gender inequality, especially in the media industry. I hope Tracey Spicer goes on to write and narrate more great books.

Irritating
I like Tracy Spicer a lot as a journalist and campaigner but I found her writing and reading style just too glib when dealing with serious events in her life - way too much sarcasm. Treats the reader like an idiot.
