Good read, not great narration

Very heavy read. Was an arduous read, only because of how many terrible things happened to Mende but riveting.

Narration wasn't great, the accent sounded quite fake and was hard to listen too.

Shocking hypocrisy and cruelty in the Sudan

The book exposes the indescribable cruelty and brutality of some Arabs in the Sudan and the hypocrisy of the arab ruling political class who benefit from it and tacitly approve. The contrast with the civilised culture of the Nuba tribe is stark.

Mende the brave

Oh this book, it always gets me. I read it for the first time in paperback when I was a teenager but hearing it being performed by the the narrator and the beautiful writing of this book just had me wanting more and more and again it’s a page turner! Absolutely beautiful, horrible and gut wrenching true story. A must read - a true 10/10 book.
