Story
When Des woke up on April 16, 2018, the morning of the Boston Marathon, it was 39 degrees and raining, with high, gusty winds. The weather didn’t bother her. In fact, she thought it might be a blessing. She was far from peak form—recovering from illness and questioning her running future—and didn’t expect much of herself that day. But as she ticked off mile after mile in the brutal conditions, passing familiar landmarks on the course she knew and loved, something shifted. Opportunity unexpectedly presented itself. Des tapped into her inner strength and found a reason to race.

Story
Today, women make up more than half of the nation’s runners. And, as more and more women have hit the roads and trails and laced up for 5-Ks and marathons, the research showing the effects of running on the female body has grown significantly, too. The truth is that even though the gap between men's and women's world best times is shrinking, the latest scientific evidence shows that running is a dramatically different experience for women than men - physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Story
Over the previous decade, Bella had been so paralysed by her fears that exercise was the very last thing on her mind. So that first run didn’t last very long. But to her surprise, she was back out there the next day. And the day after that. She began to set herself achievable goals - to run 5k in under 30 minutes, to walk to work every day for a week, to attempt 10 push-ups in a row. Before she knew it, her mood was lifting for the first time in years, and she had swapped hiding in her house for fresh air, unknown roads and running tracks.

Story
Every marathon runner’s journey is different. You might have caught the bug after experiencing that adrenaline rush of completing your first 5k; it might be a desire to finally cross something off your bucket list; or, perhaps it was a bit of an absentminded afterthought while watching TV, crisps in hand, and a niggling voice saying ‘maybe I could do that’–it was for Vassos, at least. However far along you are in your journey, How to Run A Marathon shows us that absolutely anyone can take those first steps to defeating the distance.

Using exercise, Nita discovered an inner strength she didn't know she possessed, and with the help of her canine companion, she found herself on the way to completing her first marathon. In her memoir, Sweeney shares how she overcame emotional and physical challenges to finish the race and come back from the brink.

An honest account
- By Elizabeth on 11-02-2023
Publisher's Summary
When celebrated radio personality and columnist Kerre Woodham found herself 40, overweight, and depressed she faced two choices - do nothing and probably not make it to 50 or do something and get her life back. Fortunately for all of us, and especially those women who like to eat and dress well, she decided to fight back. Leaving kilos of herself and two bra sizes behind 'somewhere in the Waitakeres', she embarked on a fitness and training regime, with a goal to complete the Auckland marathon.
To the laugh out loud delight and support of her listeners, she battled her way to fitness and achieved her goal - then decided that she didn't want to stop. With the 2008 New York marathon in her sights, Short Fat Chick documents her life changing decision to get fit and stay fit, eat what she wants and still wear a size 12 dress. With insightful comments and fitness and training tips from her personal trainer, Gaz Brown, Kerre tells it like it is and takes the listener on a journey of self-discovery and self-discipline we can all admire and emulate.

I'm now training for my first marathon
Would you listen to Short Fat Chick to Marathon Runner again? Why?
Yes, definitely. Kerre is a good storyteller and I found her memoir of getting ready to run her first (and subsequent) marathons funny, relatable and inspiring. It got me off my tush to chase the same goal for myself.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
I enjoyed the descriptions of race day in New York.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. I tend to listen to audiobooks during my commute or exercising, so I listen in batches.
Any additional comments?
If you're looking for a challenge, and to improve your fitness, I'd recommend this book.
