Publisher's Summary

You wanted the truth, you got the truth - the hottest book in the world!

Fueled by an explosive mix of makeup, costumes, and attitude, KISS burst onto the music scene 30 years ago and has become a rock institution. The band has sold more than 80 million records, has broken every concert attendance record set by Elvis Presley and the Beatles, stands behind the Beatles alone in number of gold records from any group in history, and has spawned more than 2,500 licenses.

There would have been no KISS without Gene Simmons, the outrageous star whose superlong tongue, legendary sexual exploits, and demonic makeup have made him a rock icon. KISS and Make-Up is the wild, shocking, unbelievable story, from the man himself, about how an immigrant boy from Israel studied to be a rabbi, was saved by rock and roll, and became one of the most notorious rock stars the world has ever seen.

Expected much more

Pretty easy to summarise this book: about 20% Gene's life and feelings, about 20% Kiss the band and its machinations, and the remaining 60% Gene's constant sexual conquests.

Truth is, you start to question the validity of much of the latter when it all just starts to sound like the "Ultimate Collection of Secret Male Fantasies" ripped from the pages of Penthouse.... y'know, teenage boy loses virginity when seduced by lonely older woman, daughter has mother catch them in the act and of course joins in, threesomes with twins, having multiple women in the same day, and so on... all the fantasy cliches, Gene's done 'em all - and seemingly never got a no to any of his advances either.

He may want be seen as an irresistable sexual behemoth here, but I can tell you listening to that gets pretty boring pretty quickly.

Paul Stanley's book, though not great, is a much better option if what you are after is more inside nitty gritty of Kiss during their growth from a NY club band to world megastars.

Amazing

Fascinating story on the whole. Very interesting to hear Gene’s side of the story after recently having read Ace’s book. So incredible to hear details from behind the scenes after all these years. Kiss for me, and many my age, was my gateway to rocknroll. Australia, 1980, was right in the thick of Kiss mania! I still thrive on loud guitar music to this day. Thank you KISS!

Read Paul Stanley: Face the Music instead.

Gene's tales of his sexual conquests get old very quickly. Details about the band and their albums are brushed over quickly and there tends to be a lot of flash-forwards and flash-backs.

I found it hard to get through this audiobook, whereas I couldn't stop listening to Paul Stanley's.
