A liberating motorcycle journey through Africa with descriptions of the amazing people and places, the joy of big skies and the open road, and the sometimes harrowing events that would shape destiny.
Into Africa tells the story of a novice motorcyclist who takes on the challenge of riding the length of the continent just because, 'it seemed like a great idea’. Sam Manicom had only planned to take a temporary break from his successful retail career, but the one-year ride was so life-changing that he continued adventuring around the world for another seven years, covering 55 countries and 200,000 miles. Sam had no idea how liberating motorcycle travel would be. Revelling in a new-found freedom without timetables or routines, he became fascinated by his ability to explore side roads at a whim and reach remote parts of the continent that many travellers never find. Though Africa is just 5,000 miles from top to toe, Sam explored over 22,000 miles on every kind of road imaginable.
Narrated by Sam, ride with him as he describes Africa's amazing people and places, the joy of big skies and the open road, and the sometimes harrowing events that would shape his destiny. This is a genuine tale of the unexpected.

Having spent over 5 years in Africa working at various U. S. Embassies, this audio book stuck a heart felt cord with me. Sam's descriptive abilities puts you right into the adventure and I can vouch for his accuracy. This story is not about motorcycles, but shows what the real Africa is like, which can only be experienced by motorcycle. Read or hear this book. You will be enlightened.
"Amazing narrative honest and humble!"
I could see the faces of the people and described. I could feel sensr their emotions both painful and joyful. Finally I felt like I was on the motorcycle with Sam feeling the bumps and jolts. There were times when I thought I was in Africa breathing the road test swatting flies and mosquitoes exclamation point
I love the book love the story just wish you had listed more towns along on the way so it was easier to follow the road
"Good adventure story"
I enjoyed the focus on the people and experiences, I would have like a little more about the ride. Great overall, thanks for sharing your life.
"Fantastic book. Sam does a great job ."
if you have been to Africa it will bring back great memories and if you haven't you will want tovgo.
"Couldn't press pause, fantastic adventure"
I had a hard time ever pressing pause on this one. Into Africa is a fun, exciting adventure that flows so naturally. Sam's writing style and his narration was easy to follow and made me feel like I was riding along with him the whole time. There was never a dull moment and it left me wanting more. If you're a travel enthusiast, or just looking for a fun easy listen, then this book is perfect.
I've listened several times and very much enjoy this book. It looses me a little at the end, but not a deal breaker. I would recommend.
"Need a bike now..."
So good that I need a bike now! I too want to explore and see what's out there. So good and infectious. Never read or listened to a travel book and his adventure and voice have inspired me to take motorcycle classes and one day have a journey of my own.
"More about the destinations, less about the riding"
Yes... Just in interesting book about riding through Africa and the interaction with the people.
Not really... it was all very informative.
It was a good book. It simply put a stamp of why I have no desire to visit the places he did. The book was more about the places and the people than it was about the ride. Sometimes it got really slow and boring, but other times it was interesting. Must be nice to have all that time and money to do such a thing. Although at times he was speaking of not having the funds to do something or go somewhere. Overall, it was interesting.
"Awesome story telling."
I want to.
The middle, the beginning, and the end.
I enjoyed the book so much I started it over again right away.
I had a chance to Tweet with the Sam. Neat to be able to live the experience through the book and actually message with the author.
"A real motorcycle adventure"
I listened to this book whilst on my own motorcycle adventure, riding across Canada on dirt roads. I was constantly nodding in agreement with the experiences Sam was writing about.
Reading a book can be rather abstract, you never know whether the author is stretching the truth. By reading the book himself, feel a real connection to his experiences on the road.
Sam talks about having an guardian angel watching over him and how even some of the worst events resulted in unexpected experiences. This resonated very strong with my own experiences on the road.
I would recommend this as essential material for anyone considering an adventure... or any armchair adventurers that wants to get a real feel of life on the road.
"One of the best motorcycle travel books"
One of the best
he did what most would love to do and tells it so it makes you want to do it
Have read all the books but audio seems to make it more real
Different emotions , you cannot help but feel them
Sams voice is perfect for the audio book , if he needs another job he could make a good living out of telling other peoples stories
"A mad choice leads to a brilliant adventure!"
Definitely, I have read the book and was pleased to hear it in Sam ' s own words.
I don't generally read travel books, they aren't my thing so can only be compared to Sam ' s other works... of which Under Asian Skies is the only one available on audio book yet.... I seriously encourage him to publish the others in audio format.
It is very personal and makes you feel like you are with him... His written work does this too... but hearing his voice makes it work even better.
As a biker myself I have to laugh at some of the rookie mistakes I remember making myself... but in Sam ' s case he did it on a.mad adventure for a rookie to take on. RESPECT!
I believe his insight into culture is also important as there are many misconceptions in the western world that he puts right.
Sam is a brilliant story teller who makes you feel like you are travelling with him. The fact he narrates his own books makes it more personal.
While this is about a man riding his motorcycle the bike itself is only the vehicle. .. bit he metaphorically and literally and allows for the adventure.
This book is great for both people who love bikes as well as those who have never been near one.
Really enjoyable. Excellent narration. Please can we have more audible books from Sam Manicom
"A true adventure into Africa!"
Sam's reading of the book brought it to life. I always prefer when the author reads their own book.
Wonderful tale of adventures down Africa. Plenty of mishaps and bad luck, but Sam's thoughtful and positive attitude made the trip hugely rewarding for him, and now for us the listeners. Thanks for sharing Sam - I'm inspired to seek my own adventure now!
A great story well told leaves you wanting to hears more of the Adventures after Africa
Very well put together, I loved the way the people get described and the massive adventure behind all of it. If you are keen on traveling, get ready, after this book you just want to get going!
"Good story ruined by narration"
The subject matter.
The narration was awful. It lacks any kind of expression and is read in short lines like a person reading out one line at a time and pausing before the next line. In many cases you can hear the audio start/stop after each sentence. This has made a good tale almost unbearable to listen to.
One man's motorbike trip into the unknown.
I would not recommend the audio book of this to anyone.
"One of the best! AAA*"
Sam's stories and narration are I'm sure amongst the best you'll hear. I've got all his audiobooks. Excellent.
"An amazing read / listen that I didn't want to end"
Have now also bought the print version and Sam Manicom's next Audible is top of my Wish List!
These Are The Days That Must Happen To You by Dan Walsh
All of them!
I've just finished listening to Sam Manicom’s Into Africa which, on my one book per month subscription, I’d chose it over Guy Martin’s My Autobiography on the deciding factor that its read by the author, rather than being voiced by a “professional”. It was a "book" that I couldn't put down / stop listening to and yet at the same time didn't want to get to the end of. Being read by Sam, it gives the story a whole other dimension, feeling and authenticity. If you're into motorbikes, travel, adventure or Africa, Sam Manicom's "Into Africa” is an amazing read / listen. Apologies to Guy Martin but the Audiable version of Sam’s next book Under Asian Skies now tops my Wish List!
