Publisher's Summary

Asa Akira (28) has already had an extremely unusual life. Educated at the United Nations International School in Manhattan, she soon was earning a good living by stripping and working as a dominatrix at a sex dungeon. Akira has now built up a reputation for being of the most popular, hardworking, and extreme actors in the business, winning dozens of awards for her 330+ movies, including her number-one best-selling adult film series Asa Akira Is Insatiable.

In Insatiable, Akira recounts her extraordinary life in chapters that are hilarious, shocking, and touching. In a wry, conversational tone, she talks about her experiences shoplifting and doing drugs while in school, her relationships with other porn stars (she is married to one) and with the industry at large, and her beliefs about women and sexuality. Insatiable is filled with Akira’s unusual and often highly amusing anecdotes, including her visit to a New Hampshire sex shop run by a mother and son.

In a world where porn is increasingly becoming part of the mainstream, Akira is one of very few articulate voices writing from the inside. She has something important, controversial, and astonishingly interesting to say about sex and its central role in our lives and culture.

Not very coherent and all of the place. Some of the stories were cool but overall I think it lacked a bit of depth.

    "Brain dead"

This tart is so selfish, eg thinking it's funny to drive while always texting for example, drug addict brain dead whore that gives the industry it's bad name, I couldn't wait for it to end by 3/4 way threw. The only reasons it was finished is it was on audio book.So self absorbed but she gets two stars because it appears that she's being honest and knows that if she wasn't getting gang-banged for a living she would probably have ended up a crack whore.

    "Entertaining. Exactly what you'd expect."
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Depends on the friend... The book is the very explicit story of a major porn star.

Would you be willing to try another book from Asa Akira? Why or why not?

I doubt it. Kind of seems like she'd be a one trick pony book wise.

What does Asa Akira bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She reads well and expressively. She'd probably be a pretty ok actress. I believe she likes what she does. I think some of it was just sort of trying to pander to her fans and not really genuine. I found it kind of um... patronizing? but overall ok.

Was Insatiable worth the listening time?

eh It was OK. It had some funny parts.

    Any additional comments?

    eh...

"Very graphic biography, needed more editing but ok"

As you can see from this blog I am a little fascinated by porn. I still watch (though not as much, I'm 40 as I write this and I find usually it just doesn't do much for me, no substitute for the real thing :) I think the fact that I had never seen any of Asa's movies proves that I'm not much into porn the past few years, still I was interested enough to get this from Audible (with the monthly credit system I just go by ratings, interest and length).

The book starts out with a description of a hard core sex scene from a porn movie (I tried to figure out which one I'll admit, but the answer was nowhere to be found, I might e-mail her and ask). Asa has a nice speaking voice and she can describe a sex scene well but that's not the makings of a good biography. I found that the chapters which focus on her childhood, teenage and pre-porn years were the worst in the book.

Obviously it's very hard to relate to a porn star (unless you're in the industry of course, or lead a really wild life) and you get the impression that her childhood and early teenage years were a mess, filled with crime (shoplifting for years she says), drugs, sex (she gave her first blowjob at 13, which I think is too young) and even a creepy tale of her babysitter molesting her at a young age. Thankfully the molestation story doesn't give details and, in fact, it happened when she was so young she is never completely sure anything truly sexual happened, which doesn't make it any less wrong, it's just another strange part of her life. She lived with a married couple (and had sex with both of them), worked as a stripper, a prostitute and of course does incredibly hard core porn. She just paints a picture as a very unlikable/hypocritical person. For example she condemns people in Florida and yet she lived there, for two years! Personally I've been to FL over 30 times (and once stayed for 6 weeks) and I found on the whole people are nice. I think that generally the southern states are different from the more northern and central ones, that doesn't make them necessarily worse. Her criticizing strippers also makes no sense, not only does she have sex for a living, she was also a stripper herself!

Also spread throughout the book are haiku's. I enjoy poetry (took courses in it at university) but most of these haiku's are just terrible. While I don't mind graphic details there are moments when she just goes too far. One particular encounter she has with her boss at a sex dungeon is certainly TMI, along with her describing enemas, rough sex with her husband and her first STD. It's also obvious it's her first book (and it really needed some more editing), this is especially apparent in the first chapter.

Once the book moves away from her pre-teen/teenage years it does get better. I enjoyed the behind the scenes porn stuff, learning a little about her family, her husband and her diary entries. Someone reading their diary for the whole world to know does give a voyeuristic (and in this case non-guilty) thrill. You also do feel good hearing about her success in a field she loves and I certainly felt sorry for her when she describes a molestation incident she had as an adult.

The book is not too long (really it's quite short) and does display her raw talent as a writer. I think she could write some hot erotica but I'm not sure if I'd read anything else non-fiction by her. She provides insight into why she loves porn (and displays her insecurities about her body and her performances in movies) but never gets into how porn has changed her (I think would have to) or the affect it has on any of the people she has known. So I do give this a cautious recommendation. As I said be prepared for GRAPHIC language and hard core sex scenes, obviously ages 19+.

"A Balls To The Wall, Take No Prisoners Life"

Wow. I was totally surprised by this book. Profane, vulgar, sexually explicit. Yet at the same time hilariously funny and touching. I'm not sure I believe everything she describes in her memoir. However it's told in such a entertaining and mesmerizing style it's hard not to be drawn in by her story

Some reviewers were put off by her non linear narrative. The way she kept circling back to describe certain circumstances. I found it worked well. The only thing I found unpleasant was a detailed description of some rather rough play between Asa and her husband. I personally don't think any woman should be treated like that. That's my hang up I guess.

Despite that Ms Akira writes well and is a good narrator of her own work. If her second recently published book eventually goes on sale like this one, I might read it.

    "What A Life"

Starts out as a fun and interesting story of one girl's life but ultimately ends up making this reader sad. After listening to the next to last chapter, I hope she never has children.

    "Starts strong but lacks coherence."

Asa is pretty hilarious on twitter and is obviously a pretty great performer in her genre and I enjoyed a lot of this book as a result of her wit and her insight. I've always liked her voice and her narration is very good too. The only problem is that about halfway through the book it feels like she has simply run out of things to say. The book keeps going though so we are treated to her narrating her old diary entries and random letters she has written to different people. That said, I laughed a lot at her story of the glory hole drill and her description of falling in love with her husband during a gang bang. It's priceless to get a perspective on the world from a person whose life is so different to mine. No regrets in listening to it but you probably only want to download this if you're already a fan.

    "Telling her story"

Its a story about Asa finding herself through her work in porn. She reads her story well. It is interesting to hear her words and inflections about it. Especially the ending letter. It is worth a fun read. Think her reading the book actually adds to the reality of her life.

    "Disappointed!"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Not really. I was expecting to hear about "behind the scenes", not Asa reliving many different sexual encounters. I could've watched one of her movies & got most of the same information as I did from this book!

What was most disappointing about Asa Akira’s story?

Listening to all the sex scenes, as she was reliving them, and not hearing more about the down side to porn, what agents deal with, what happens to some of the other people in the Porn industry. I don't have an issue with a book, or magazine, detailing porn sex scenes. However, I wasn't expecting this book to be basically the same as reading a porn book.

Would you be willing to try another one of Asa Akira’s performances?

    No

What else would you have wanted to know about Asa Akira’s life?

More about her LIFE & how the various areas of Porn operate. I would've liked to understand how it works behind the scenes, not how HER orgasms happen, over & over again. There are many books I could've listened to if I wanted to HEAR porn, instead of watching a porn movie.

    Any additional comments?

Narcissistic is the one word that comes to mind while listening to Asa Akira's. The "Love Story" part comes out as Asa's intense love for Asa!

"It's Like Grabbing a Coffee with Asa"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend it, although I don't think it's to everyone's liking. The subject in itself, and her frankness is sure to scare the more... prudish segments on society off.

What did you like best about this story?

That it's not a story - don't go into this thinking it's gonna be nicely structured and follow some sort of narrative. I don't know why, but it comes out as conversation (whether she intended this or not). Imagine sitting down for a coffee with Asa, and she's telling you about her life without a script or plan, just talking.

How could the performance have been better?

Asa is not very good, she's not clear at times, going on mumbling, and especially the haikus were absolutely impossible to hear. I was listening to this in a car most of the time, but even without the possible engine noises, she's not trained (obviously) in narration.

But, on the other hand, I was happy that she was reading it herself.

Could you see Insatiable being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

No, there would be no point. Her experiences as a human are in no way extraordinary.

    Any additional comments?

Her passion for her work might give you a new view on porn.
