Fanny Hensel war die ältere doch gleichermaßen musikalisch hochtalentierte Schwester des Komponisten Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Sie verbrachte die ersten Jahre ihrer Kindheit in ihrer Geburtsstadt Hamburg. Fanny erhielt den ersten Klavierunterricht von ihrer Mutter und konnte bereits als 13-jährige die 24 Präludien aus dem "Wohltemperierten Klavier" von Johann Sebastian Bach auswendig vortragen. Aber anders als Ihren Bruder Felix ermunterte sie der Vater nicht in ihren musikalischen Ambitionen. Verbot ihr gar eigene Auftritte oder später die Drucklegung ihrer Kompositionen.
Erst mit der Heirat mit dem damals berühmten Hofmaler Wilhelm Hensel veränderte sich das Leben Fannys. Sie befreite sich zunehmend vom Familiendogma, das Frauen nicht für Geld auftreten und komponieren dürfen, was zunächst vom Vater und später vom Bruder Felix vertreten wurde. Als Pianistin trat sie dennoch nur ein einziges Mal in ihrem Leben öffentlich auf. Bis zu ihrem Tod komponierte sie aber über 470 eigene Werke, hauptsächlich Klavierstücke, Chöre und Kantaten.
Dieses Hörbuch zeichnet mit Ausschnitten aus Fannys musikalischem Schaffen und Auszügen aus ihren Tagebüchern und Briefen ein Charakterportrait der ebenso begabten, wie Zeit ihres Lebens unbeachtet gebliebenen Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn.
