Publisher's Summary

Sgt. Don Malarkey takes us not only into the battles fought from Normandy to Germany, but into the heart and mind of a soldier who beat the odds to become an elite paratrooper and lost his best friend during the nightmarish engagement at Bastogne.

Drafted in 1942, Malarkey arrived at Toccoa Camp in Georgia and was one of six soldiers who earned their Eagle wings and went to England in 1943 to provide ground cover for the largest amphibious military attack in history: Operation Overlord.

In the darkness of D-Day morning, Malarkey parachuted into France and, within days, was awarded a Bronze Star for his heroism in battle. He fought for 23 days in Normandy, nearly 80 in Holland, 39 in Bastogne, and nearly 30 more in and near Haguenau, France, and the Ruhr pocket in Germany.

This is his dramatic tale of those bloody days fighting his way from the shores of France to the heartland of Germany, and the epic story of how an adventurous kid from Oregon became a leader of men.

Great story of an easy company soldier!

Has great insight into malarkey’s life as an easy company soldier and the hell he had seen through those years.

Good read for Easy Company History

At times I felt this was a retelling of the events of Band of Brothers, but with a lot of Marlarkey's take on events, but that aside, this is a very well done account of his experiences in war. Some of the things they correct about the series is interesting in itself, like how he cannot understand why they change where the Ameican fighting for the Germans was born. The insight into the depth of his friendship with Muck was also very well laid out and moving. Very enjoyable book.

Must Read! Even if you've read Band of Brothers

This book from Sgt Malarkey, I may have enjoyed more than Band of Brothers novel by Ambrose. It may be because it was in first person and I could feel more connected to the story. Malarkey clears up factual errors from the B.O.B book and the tv show. Anyone concerned it may rehash the story too much, don't worry as when it does describe a well known event from B.O.B, it is so interesting as it's from Malarkey's point of view and can differ somewhat.
