Publisher's Summary

Sir Peter Ustinov's beautifully crafted autobiography is told with exquisite wit and insight. From his birth in April 1921, it spans his extraordinary career as actor, playwright, film star, and director, confirming his early belief that he is 'irrevocably betrothed to laughter'. Ustinov's renowned gift for mimicry is exploited to the full in Dear Me. Eccentric relatives, school masters, sergeant majors, and manic Hollywood moguls are all brought unforgettably to life.

    "Highly entertaining"

Peter Ustinov's memoir is a gem in print, but the life and vocal nuance that his narration bring to "Dear Me" are more priceless still. Would that he had narrated an entire shelf bristling with audio books!

"Boring uninspired woes about PUs life"

I was expecting to read about the funny things that happened in this man's life because he is so funny in a lot of his performances. But this was a book of remembrances that I would not like to remember about the man. It was uninspired and not funny.--More about his relationship with his parents and how he played that out over his lifetime.

    "Such a shame"

For such an interesting person as Peter Ustinov was, it is amazing his publisher's allowed such a lifeless, and unstructured ramblings to go out. Obviously he was better in the telling of short stories than this rather long self-story.

    "A curate's egg"

I was looking forward to listening to this book; the combination of Peter Ustinov's wit, fascinating life and peerless raconteur seemed unbeatable. I did enjoy it but not as much as I thought I would. The abridgment was rather too short for my liking making for quite big jumps in continuity; the balance of humour, seriousness and his up and down life did not really gel with me; and whilst he reads his book well, bringing characters brilliantly to life in dialogue, it was as another reviewer has commented a bit subdued and oddly lacking in color. I've listened to similar books by William Shatner and Clive James both of whom are much better tellers of their own story.

So recommended but only three stars for me.

    "In the Spirit of Ustinov!"

I enjoyed the voices and perspectives of Ustinov as he leads us from his birth and childhood to adulthood. It allowed me to appreciate the influences and family background that lead to him being such a fine raconteur (all, naturally, told through vignette anicdotes!).

I'm a fan of Ustinov performances - particularly his pleasure in having an audience and 'upping' his game to match the reaction. This reading doesn't have that element, so is somewhat subdued for it.

    Still enjoyable and informative.

    "Classsic Ustinov"

The great whitt and racontour that is Peter Ustinov shines through in this reconting of varioussections of his life.Beginning (Of course) with his birth, Peter leads us through his school and movie life using anecdotes from the highs and lows of the time in a way only Mr ustinov knows.
    Beautifully told.

Would you try another book written by Peter Ustinov or narrated by Peter Ustinov?

    Yes

Would you ever listen to anything by Peter Ustinov again?

    Yes

Would you be willing to try another one of Peter Ustinov’s performances?

    Yes

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    None at all.

    Any additional comments?

This was not what I would have expected from peter Ustinov. He is wonderful in all the work he has done in his life, without doubt but this book was a serious let down for me. It just wasn't him as we know him.....

    "Life in bullet points"

3 hours to tell the life story of a great man. Unfortunately for the listener this was done in a "bullet point" style and we don't learn anything of this great actor/playwright. A man of this magnitude should have filled a thousand hours ...and I would have listened. Disappointing.

    "A very funny read"

Once again Mr Ustinov has performed in his usual manner. I found it impossible to stop listening until I reached the end. He has proved yet again to be one of the funniest people around.
