Publisher's Summary

The compelling, inspiring (often comic) coming-of-age story of Trevor Noah, set during the twilight of apartheid and the tumultuous days of freedom that followed.

One of the comedy world's brightest new voices, Trevor Noah is a light-footed but sharp-minded observer of the absurdities of politics, race and identity, sharing jokes and insights drawn from the wealth of experience acquired in his relatively young life. As host of the US hit show The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, he provides viewers around the globe with their nightly dose of biting satire, but here Noah turns his focus inward, giving listeners a deeply personal, heartfelt and humorous look at the world that shaped him.

Noah was born a crime, son of a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother, at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents' indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the first years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, take him away.

A collection of 18 personal stories, Born a Crime tells the story of a mischievous young boy growing into a restless young man as he struggles to find his place in a world where he was never supposed to exist. Born a Crime is equally the story of that young man's fearless, rebellious and fervently religious mother - a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence and abuse that ultimately threatens her own life.

Whether subsisting on caterpillars for dinner during hard times, being thrown from a moving car during an attempted kidnapping, or just trying to survive the life-and-death pitfalls of dating in high school, Noah illuminates his curious world with incisive wit and unflinching honesty. His stories weave together to form a personal portrait of an unlikely childhood in a dangerous time, as moving and unforgettable as the very best memoirs and as funny as Noah's own hilarious stand-up.

Born a Crime is a must-listen.

"i couldn't wait to go back to listening"

i hated pausing this book. i couldve listened to this all in one go if i didn't have to go to work. Trevors different voices of different characters were impressive, hearing the different African languages was beautiful ( i dont know many africans ) and for such serious content matter he still had a way of making me laughing out loud & helping me understand. Hes tells the story like youre a friend. As a part samoan part kiwi the struggles of the inbetween rang familiare and some of the cultural norms i could relate to as well. LISTEN TO THIS BOOK. I'll definitely be going back to it. Thanks for sharing Trevor 😊.

    "Such a beautiful story!"

So I went to high school with Trevor and I was able to intimately relate to half of the book all the way down to the pirating empire. Trevor tells the story in such an amazing way. The accents he uses brings out his sheer talent. There's humour where you least expect it. And although he's not religious he tells a deeply emotional story of the power of prayer. His mother is an amazing woman. Thanks for sharing your story Trevor.

    Awesome!
    Not like his comedy routines.
But very funny stories from his childhood in shanty town squalor.
    His mother was amazing.
He was half-black half white born in apartheid.
Doesn't cover his career in comedy etc
Tragedy pain humour hustling naughtiness etc
Leave with Hope and gratitude in face of challenging life
    Great narration
    Highly recommend

Amazing. Such a beautiful story that made me laugh and cry. Trevor Noah's story is one of amazing courage, brutal honesty about often forgotten historical events, and above all else, the unconditional love of an extremely remarkable mother.

Thank you Trevor! As a white South African growing up at the same time with a single mom who could only afford 'poor' areas it was so wonderful to hear about your experiences. It was such a confusing and difficult time, yet we have so much to be grateful for.

    "Definitely recommend"

An amazing listen. Trevor and his family have been through so much, and it was such an experience getting to be a part of it. Trevor is a master of accents and he harnessed that skill to make the book entertaining and provide a gravity to the more serious situations whose nuance would have otherwise been lost. I look forward to his next book. 10/10 will definitely listen to again.

"An amazing performance of a riveting story"
Would you consider the audio edition of Born a Crime to be better than the print version?

For Non-African people unfamiliar with African culture, the performance of the audiobook by Trevor Noah imparts the heart of the book more than it might if it was read off the pages. Trevor Noah is funny, heartfelt & vigorous.

What did you like best about this story?

The amazing turn of events and the author as we know today, managing to escape that life and being where he is now.

What about Trevor Noah’s performance did you like?

The book deals with multiple cultures ranging from European to African and languages of different African tribes. It is likely very few people can bring the book to life & one of those people is Trevor Noah.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, it is RIVETING. But it is 8 hours.

    Any additional comments?

    Very satisfied with this audiobook.

Hearing it first hand from Trevor just made it all the more wonderful. As a South African who moved to the US at the age of 18 to escape abuse, his childhood stories have been awe inspiring. I could see every street! I went to King David Linksfield. It was just incredible.

Excellent book. I appreciate the candid glimpse into the lives of victims of colonoalism and apartheid. I pray one day there maybe a way to get the real story of persons stolen away from their families across the continent during tge arabic and trans-atlantic slave trade.

"Brilliant, unique and full of memories."

This book brings back a lot of memories for me growing up in South Africa. I was one of Trevor's friends in high school, in fact I'm the person who he mentions helped start his pirated cd business but to hear about his life from the "other side", growing up as a poor black South African under such trying conditions really brings your own life in to perspective. The Trevor I knew and the front he put on was miles away from how his life really was. Although parts of it do seem to have a slight bit of creative license - at least the bits I am aware of - it is a still fantastic story about a incredibly talented and determined individual who has risen to where he is today because of his mother and her determination to make him a man. Just listen to it, you will not be disappointed.

"Incredible story of this man's life"

I always love to hear stories read by the author. This is no exception. I've always loved Trevor's comedy and I had no idea of the life he has lived. I particularly love the stories about his mother, she sounds like a wonderful, funny and strong woman, the kind of mother to aspire to be like. It was very interesting to also learn more about South Africa and apartheid, something I feel I have greater understanding of now and how it has affected families and it's lasting effects.

    "Smart, funny and heartbreaking!"

From chapter one this audio book had me going through all the emotions I could go through. Trevor has a great relaxed way of speaking that almost lessens the harshness of some of his story. I found myself laughing out loud and then deep in thought and almost to tears with some of the content. I would highly recommend to any one who is a fan of Trevor, but also wants to know what it was like growing up in South Africa.

Loved this book! I've not read an autobiography this good since 'Dreams from my Father'. My first time listening to an audiobook and Trevor Noah deserves a Grammy for the audio alone! Funny, sad and heartwarming. My most favourite parts were the ones with his mother in them. Her strength, love, wisdom, generosity, sense of freedom, not just physically but mentally, ugh, sorry to reduce it to this but his mother is just #goals!

    "Brilliant on many levels."
If you could sum up Born a Crime in three words, what would they be?

    Funny, Moving, Gripping.

What did you like best about this story?

Trevor Noah tells an amazing story of growing up in South Africa under Apartheid. It is incredibly insightful, because he grows up experiencing both Apartheid, and post-apartheid south africa, and being Half Swiss-Half South African he is able to tell the story from so many perspectives.

What does Trevor Noah bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Trevor Noah, is has managed to create one of the best Audio books I have ever listened to. He is already an extremely talented multilinguistic performer. Hearing him narrate his own story, makes the whole experience so much better. It makes everything so much more personal and moving, since his impressions are vivid, funny and convey his story so much better than the written word could ever do. His performance adds a whole additional dimensions to the book.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It was very moving. The relationship between Trevor Noah and his Mother was especially moving, and made me tear up with sadness, anger, hope. I feel Trevor Noah manages to make the listener experience more emotion than most professional writers could ever hope to.

    Any additional comments?

I can not recommend this audio book enough. Even if you are not a fan of stand-up or the daily show, this autobiography is extremely unique, insightful and moving.
