Publisher's Summary

The compelling, inspiring (often comic) coming-of-age story of Trevor Noah, set during the twilight of apartheid and the tumultuous days of freedom that followed.

One of the comedy world's brightest new voices, Trevor Noah is a light-footed but sharp-minded observer of the absurdities of politics, race and identity, sharing jokes and insights drawn from the wealth of experience acquired in his relatively young life. As host of the US hit show The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, he provides viewers around the globe with their nightly dose of biting satire, but here Noah turns his focus inward, giving listeners a deeply personal, heartfelt and humorous look at the world that shaped him.

Noah was born a crime, son of a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother, at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents' indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the first years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, take him away.

A collection of 18 personal stories, Born a Crime tells the story of a mischievous young boy growing into a restless young man as he struggles to find his place in a world where he was never supposed to exist. Born a Crime is equally the story of that young man's fearless, rebellious and fervently religious mother - a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence and abuse that ultimately threatens her own life.

Whether subsisting on caterpillars for dinner during hard times, being thrown from a moving car during an attempted kidnapping, or just trying to survive the life-and-death pitfalls of dating in high school, Noah illuminates his curious world with incisive wit and unflinching honesty. His stories weave together to form a personal portrait of an unlikely childhood in a dangerous time, as moving and unforgettable as the very best memoirs and as funny as Noah's own hilarious stand-up.

Born a Crime is a must-listen.

    "Amazing!"

A beautiful, heart-breaking, eye opening story of life and family. Trevor's ability to tell a story shines here, I don't know if reading it would be the same without his accents and impersonations. His love for his Mother is so clear here, and she is definitely someone to admire! Thank you for sharing your story and educating me a little more about the wider world.

"An emotionally packed, yet hilarious and well painted biography"

    Highly recommend.
Trevor Noah's story is one that deserves to be heard. But in this story, there are no superheroes, there is no crime syndicate, no elaborate scandal, no adultery....only pure heart and soul. Trevor beautifully narrates his life story growing up in South Africa during the times of Apartheid and growing up a coloured child. It is obvious the real superhero in his story is his Mother. Such a wonderful woman you are, God bless her! This books makes you imagine the streets of SA as if you were there makes you laugh out loud, touches your heart and tugs at your heart strings. Trevor's reading performance filled with his energy and mimicry is like listening to a play on radio. Loved it so much. Let's all share and support his story.

"Born a crime, the different lives we live."
What made the experience of listening to Born a Crime the most enjoyable?

I too am a mixed race and living in Australia I never had to hide my race. Sure I had some silly kids call me names growing up but nothing like TN had to endure, walking behind or on the other side of the rd.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Many, TN mother had many wise words that helped him grow into the man he is today.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    yeah for sure, easy reading

    Any additional comments?

Great to see someone in TN case grow into a great young man that confronts these world wide issues head on with he's comedy.

"nothing like the author reading his book. lovedit"

Noah s story is not like the old ark but tells a life of struggle, luck, love, hope, forgiveness and hope that most of this planet suffers. From a child born different on a hard part of the world his story reveals how with his mother's love in street wise South Africa Trevor learnt to be a smart man, a good man and who he is now and how his message to all of us on a daily base keeps our eyes open on a world of powerful people who take advantage of the rest without mercy just because they can.

"An amazing performance of a riveting story"
Would you consider the audio edition of Born a Crime to be better than the print version?

For Non-African people unfamiliar with African culture, the performance of the audiobook by Trevor Noah imparts the heart of the book more than it might if it was read off the pages. Trevor Noah is funny, heartfelt & vigorous.

What did you like best about this story?

The amazing turn of events and the author as we know today, managing to escape that life and being where he is now.

What about Trevor Noah’s performance did you like?

The book deals with multiple cultures ranging from European to African and languages of different African tribes. It is likely very few people can bring the book to life & one of those people is Trevor Noah.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, it is RIVETING. But it is 8 hours.

    Any additional comments?

    Very satisfied with this audiobook.

"Written for the American reader /listener"

Being a South African, I feel that this story was written for an American audience. Not that it's good or bad, just feel that as a South African listening to it, some parts were just 'over explained'. I was a bit bored here and there, but the last bit was quite gripping, and I reiterate, I think it's for the American reader. That said, well done Trevor, for rising like the Sphinx.

Respect to Trevor Noah and his Mum. Good read about his trials and tribulations growing up in RSA. It was a tough but also colourful life. Inspiring to see what he has become despite the odds. His Mum certainly gave him all the opportunities she could.

    Trevor,

This is an absolutely amazing book, gives a real perspective into the history of the county from a non-political figure but a person whose gone through it personally, Im buying the books for my staff and most definitely a must read for South African youth especially, because it talks about the day to day struggles and how you eventually overcame them!

    Really amazing!

"Brilliant, unique and full of memories."

This book brings back a lot of memories for me growing up in South Africa. I was one of Trevor's friends in high school, in fact I'm the person who he mentions helped start his pirated cd business but to hear about his life from the "other side", growing up as a poor black South African under such trying conditions really brings your own life in to perspective. The Trevor I knew and the front he put on was miles away from how his life really was. Although parts of it do seem to have a slight bit of creative license - at least the bits I am aware of - it is a still fantastic story about a incredibly talented and determined individual who has risen to where he is today because of his mother and her determination to make him a man. Just listen to it, you will not be disappointed.

"Incredible story of this man's life"

I always love to hear stories read by the author. This is no exception. I've always loved Trevor's comedy and I had no idea of the life he has lived. I particularly love the stories about his mother, she sounds like a wonderful, funny and strong woman, the kind of mother to aspire to be like. It was very interesting to also learn more about South Africa and apartheid, something I feel I have greater understanding of now and how it has affected families and it's lasting effects.

    "Powerful biography"

This is not really what I expected from the Comedian Trever Noah. It's a sobering tale of being born and raised a mixed race boy in Apartheid, and newly post Apartheid, South Africa. It's very well written and he narrates it himself perfectly. The only thing I disliked, but not enough to diminish the 5* review score, is his references to "all Americans will understand this (and) although South African culture is very different, Americans will get this". This jarred for me. Did he write it with just Americans in mind? Does he think only Americans will read it? Hmm!

"Definitely the best audiobook in my collection!!!"

This book was quite interesting, engaging and informative. I reckon it is better to listen to it rather than reading it, as Trevor's voice takes you through the range of human emotions, I teared up at times, laughed out loud, got angry, despaired and was hopeful again... it was definitely worth the amount paid.

    "extraordinary!"

This is a riveting story of the extraordinary early years of Trevor and his remarkable mother. All the adversity, prejudice, alienation present in the south African society he was raised in he seems to have been able to turn to his advantage. He always felt a misfit, an outsider, but rather than feeling sorry for himself it fuelled his ambition and energy to rise above the limitations of his society.
