Publisher's Summary

We do a dangerous job. We knew that when we signed up. We reach out to each other in difficult times. We are there for each other - all the time! These words echo the words of almost every firefighter and paramedic who is challenged with saving lives and property everyday they are on the job. Shootings, stabbings, building fires, and car accidents are just some of the nail-biting daily experiences of these brave public servants.

Gary Ludwig has been a firefighter/paramedic for 37 years and has worked in two of the most violent cities in the United States (St. Louis and Memphis) for 34 years of those years. He gathers his experiences in this field and presents an honest overview of his experiences with the emotions, feelings, sights, and gut-wrenching efforts men and women in this field experience to save a life or property. This is the insider look at a profession few of us fully appreciate: This book gains the profession the respect that is due. This is a book filled with drama, compassion, and a true understanding of EMS and the fire service. Not since "Report from Engine Company 82" have stories like these been told in such a realistic way.

"Incredible insight, not for the faint of heart"

Amazing career, but no logical flow. Had to skip parts as a parent, too heartbreaking.

    Story
    "AWESOME!!!"

As a firefighter/paramedic myself, these stories remind me of some the calls that I have been on but definitely not to that extent. It gives the public a look into what the fire service does day in and day out. Gary Ludwig does a terrific job at describing some of the of calls someone goes on throughout their career. It is a must listen for anybody in the fire and EMS field or any politician who controls the purse strings for the fire service!

    Story
    "He Captures It!"
Would you listen to Blood, Sweat, Tears and Prayers again? Why?

Yes! Chief Ludwig captures what it is like to be on the front line with our nation's first responders in two of our most iconic cities. He introduces the reader to what is beyond the headlines and he absolutely captures the emotions, feelings, sights, sounds, and smells of what it is like to be a firefighter and paramedic. Sometimes I felt I was standing next to him and the firefighters as they performed their duties. An excellent listen!

What about Kevin Kollins’s performance did you like?

I love how it was not just mono. He knew just when and where to raise and accentuate his voice at critical moments.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    Beyond the Headlines!

    Story
    "One story after another"
What would have made Blood, Sweat, Tears and Prayers better?

More in depth stories, not the rapid fire format that the book has...it's exhausting

What was most disappointing about Gary Ludwig’s story?

This was just a compilation of one short story after another after another...

    Any additional comments?

I expected a more in depth explanation of what it's like to do the jobs he did, not just a headline to headline succession of incidents.

    "Amazing read"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone, not limited to those in the fire service. It is a true life look into the world of first responders. The story keeps your attention from beginning to end with laughter, sadness and triumph.
