Here is a welcome addition to the Bolinda programme to coincide with the musician's next tour to Australia - and a wonderful gift idea for Andre Rieu fans.
Andre Rieu is a violinist, conductor, and international star following sales of more than 10 million CDs worldwide. With his extravagant concerts and compelling TV specials, he has won the hearts of millions of music lovers. Born in the Netherlands in 1949, Andre grew up surrounded exclusively by classical music. He started taking violin lessons at the age of five, the beginning of a love affair that would never end. As a student he was asked to take part in a salon ensemble and as he played his first waltz, a whole new world opened up for him. From that time on, Andre was hooked on the waltzes' rhythm and dreamt of creating a large orchestra that would enchant its audience. After recruiting his own "Johann Strauss Orchestra", he began to tour. He has toured throughout the world and won audience's hearts everywhere he goes.
Crowned the "Waltz King", Andre's wish was to make classical music accessible for everyone, and this has undoubtedly come true. All over the world, millions of people of all ages enjoy going to his concerts and listening to his music. My Music My Life explores the story of Andre's youth, growing up in the Netherlands; the musical family he grew up in; his music studies; and his extraordinary success story. This fascinating biography was written by Andre's wife, Marjorie Rieu.

Compelling listening. This is not about a person who became an overnight star, but about one, who with his wife and family, worked hard for many years to achieve a dream, a dream which finally came true. I only hope Conservatorium's today teach students what to do after they leave music school, how to market themselves, get jobs, etc. Andre, as with many other musicians, had to find out the hard penniless way, but gained from the experience. However, only the persistent win through, and Andre is one of them. Generally a book written by a family member is biased, but Marjorie Rieu, like her husband, is thorough and, speaking through her husband, is frank, telling his story as it happened. I empathised and laughed with her on her feelings when watching Andre's concerts, hoping nothing would go wrong. This audio version is well worth listening to - a first for me. The narrator is very clear. I had no problems with downloading it or with the soundtrack. Lovely story.
