Publisher's Summary

That a Jew living in Nazi Berlin survived the Holocaust at all is surprising. That he was a homosexual and a teenage leader in the resistance and yet survived is amazing. But that he endured the ongoing horror with an open heart, with love and without vitriol, and has written about it so beautifully is truly miraculous. This is Gad Beck's story.

Critic Reviews

"So intense and authentic that [the] narrative pulls you along." ( The New York Times)
"(Beck's) astute observations of daily life in Nazi Berlin, related in a chatty, humorous style, present a full, complex portrait of the times." ( Publishers Weekly)

Had to stop and buy the book instead

Could not agree more with the review below saying that the narration of this book ruined the entire experience for them. Im only 1/2 an hour into the story and I cant take it.

Ive been completely distracted from Gads beautiful and charming story of his childhood growing up post war due to the terrible audio. The narrator mispronounces words, leaves large gaps before phrases in other languages so that its apparent that he is trying to work out how to say them. You can hear obvious page turning and places where the audio was stopped and interjected with audio from a different recording session. Inflections are all over the place making sentences not make sense and lose all meaning. I dont know how this got approved for sale to be honest.

I cannot continue listening to this especially given the importance of the story. So before I get Any deeper into the book Im off to buy the kindle version and read it instead.

Book was a lot about his sexual life.

Not my cup of tea. I am not interested in reading about someone's sex life.
