You may know him as an actor, but Alan Cumming is also a singer, a director, a producer and an author.
His New York Times best-selling memoir Not My Father's Son is the gripping story of his complicated relationship with his father and the mystery of his grandfather's untimely death.
Suspenseful, brave, moving and honest, it's a book about finding good through bad and light beyond darkness. Alan is interviewed about Not My Father's Son by David Marr during the Sydney Writers' Festival 2015.

I really like Alan Cumming. His humour, his openess. In this I found even more to inspire. His self awareness and ability to survive with his sense of self intact against the odds. Now I don't just like him, I want to be like him.

This interview was interesting to listen to. Hearing about Alan story. I
Liked this story.
"Entertaining & Free"
For a free listen, this interview is definitely worth the time, especially for anyone who is already a fan of Alan Cumming. I already loved him from his superlative performance as Mr. Elton in the 1996 American film version of Emma, as well in The Anniversary Party, that wildly experimental and endlessly fascinating movie he made with Jennifer Jason Leigh. Here I learned about Alan Cumming the man--his early life, struggles with his abusive father, love of Scotland, reasons for wanting to become a U.S. citizen, hopes for Scottish independence, career aspirations, personal anxieties, and much more. The only downside is the interviewer, who is annoyingly cloying and insinuating, inserting himself far too freely into the process and his subject's narrative. But considering that it's free, this is still a valuable listen. Many thanks to the reviewers I follow for recommending it!
"Alan Cumming is a hoot!"
I'm always amazed by Cumming's insightfulness and authenticity, every time I hear him speak. What an incredible and inspiring person!
"fascinating and funny"
I knew nothing about this comedian, so was surprised at both the story and the hilarious delivery. it is amazing to see someone who has been able to use a very clever wit to heal from such egregious childhood abuse.
"I never knew I loved alan cumming"
This interview was so wonderful to listen to. To just hear alan's voice and that cute giggle he has when he is trying to tell a story in only the way he can. I wish I had been there and could take alan for coffee, tea, or a good stiff Scottish drink and spend the evening with him. I am going to listen to the book starting tomorrow. I can't wait to hear alan's story in his own voice.
too short yet if your are a fan of his it hardly matters. may God bless him!
"Love the guy!"
Really enjoyed hearing from this amazing character... Made me realise that you can still be happy and successful in life, no matter how your parents treated you
Nice one for the price great quality audible for the price point. I'm a fan
"interested in reading his book now!"
this was a good introduction to the very interesting story about his family and the dysfunctionality that he has overcome. I would definitely buy the book now.
"A rare and wonderful orchid"
Extraordinarily honest and radiant with humanity. Alan, you're a good egg. I can't wait to hear more from you. My smile is wide today. Thanks lovely man!
"Surprised and Relieved"
I have loved Alan Cumming ubertalent and his boyish ways. But that he was abused really shocked me. l have seen his book but it didn't register. This is Alan Cumming, my funny man and sweet soul, and a past that can't be grasped.
I listened to this interview and felt so much pride for him and his family. I will definitely get the book now. l sense his story in mine. This, to me makes me surprised and relieved.
"Pretty insightful "
Pretty insightful for a free listen, learned a lot about Mr Cummings background! Really good man. A true inspiration to us Scots
"Short but interesting"
A matter of fact and lighthearted interview about serious and surprising life issues. I'm now going to get the book which they talked about!
Enjoyable and entertaining interview. Funny but with a serious undertone. The author Alan Cumming is witty and likeable.
"ANOTHER MOAN ABOUT POOR CHILDHOODS - BORING YAWN MONEY SPINNER!"
The first ten minuets are interesting then once Alan has got that bit off his chest, it is one LONG BORE of ME ME ME.
We all have something in the closet, why can't actors and singers just leave it where it belongs - in the past and enjoy the life they have made for themselves instead of SHOWING THEMSELVES UP along with THEIR FAMILIES. THEY DO AND SAY ANYTHING FOR MONEY. I HAVE GOT A RE FUND ON THIS BORING GARBAGE.
"Great intro to incredible book"
Loved hearing Alan talk at ease about his story. Then went to the book ans was appalled and fascinated. Highly recommended
Wasn't expecting it to be so engaging. Bless him! Alan is a sweetheart. An easy listen for a Sunday afternoon.
"The mind behind an intriguing performer"
I have been a fan of Alan Cumming from his musical theatre performances in 'cabaret' to 'Romy and Michele's High School Reunion' to 'X-men 2' as 'Nightcrawler' to 'The Good Wife'. He's a brilliant actor with incredible range and a marvellous musical theatre performer. A short but captivating pieces of Alan Cummings life - his relationship with his father and the complexities of the disrupt of concept of family and what it means when ties are tested. . He's charming and a it's a light to learn more about the man.We get to hear glimpses of his past within this audiobook, getting a rare insight behind the mind behind an intriguing performer.
Loved hearing this story can relate to it so well. Would like to have heard more...
i bought this because Alan reminds me of someone i used to fancy . I swear i'm not that shallow. The thing is, I've read so many books that I've honestly exhausted all the "methods" of how I choose new books to read.
So about this? it's an interview with Alan in a theatre setting. He was his usual self: bubbly wrapped in melancholy, slightly depressed but always eager to " tell you his story in order to a reaction from you". He was promoting his autobiography which i can't wait for.
