Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall, written and read by Spike Milligan.
At Victoria station the R.T.O. gave me a travel warrant, a white feather and a picture of Hitler marked 'This is your enemy'. I searched every compartment, but he wasn't on the train....
In this, the first of Spike Milligan's uproarious recollections of life in the army, our hero takes us from the outbreak of war in 1939 ('it must have been something we said') through his attempts to avoid enlistment ('time for my appendicitis, I thought') and his gunner training in Bexhill ('there was one drawback. No ammunition') to the landing at Algiers in 1943 ('I closed my eyes and faced the sun. I fell down a hatchway').
Filled with bathos, pathos and gales of ribald laughter, this is a barely sane helping of military goonery and superlative Milliganese.

Love the way Spike cracks up at his own reminiscences. Seeing as you're cracking up at the same time it feels like you're sharing the joke between you.
"A touching but funny look WW2"
One of favourite books of all time.
touching with all the wit and charm of a true comedy genius.
"It's war but not as we know it!"
I've read the book, but actually listening to Spike brought it to life.
There was only one Spike Milligan and this book gives you a great insight into his early life as a soldier. Full of Milligan wit, it also shows us his solemn side.
Vivid memories come to life leaving you with a mental picture of his every move.
How the hell did we win the war!
"You just don't get better"
I won these books as part of my school leavers achievement award - everybody asked for record tokens - back in 1984 and to hear these wise-cracking books read by their incredible author is just bliss, hearing him crack up at his own jokes is a delight and reminds me how much richer we were with a Spike around, brilliant.
"Praise from a lifelong Goons fan"
I was brought up with the Goons and am addicted to their humour. This audio book is just great.
"well done Spike"
loved it read these books many years ago but its great to hear Spike read them
"there's only one spike milligan..."
I've read the books...they were funny, but to hear the authors voice reading aloud and laughing at parts of his own story, well, priceless.
"The genius that is Spike."
Pathos and humour by a genius of British comedy. Compliments the book completely. Thanks Spike.
"A classic of comedy and social history"
The heading for this text box asks "What did you like most about Adolf Hitler?". I like nothing about Adolf Hitler, the 'orrible ol' blighter!
Even writing a review for the audiobook is hilarious! Written and read by Milligan this book is very funny, though perhaps takes some getting used to if you are unfamiliar with his style of humour.
I would compare it to the Bible. It is not a very good comparison, but now I'm just being silly!
It's told in the first person so I would have to say errr Spike Milligan was my favorite character, as performed by Spike Milligan.
This is not only a funny book, but also a first hand account of the life of a conscripted solider in Britain during the early years of World War II. This historical importance is often overlooked and one feels if the jokes were removed it would be regarding as an important historical source rather than just a funny book. This perspective is important as this is a period of history that is often quite dry, or focused on feats of daring do, and great battles. This book demonstrates what it was like for one ordinary person, and not a great political or military leader. His comedy style takes some getting used to if you're not familiar with the Goon show, with puns and gags coming very thick and fast. Greatly enjoyable!
"Short and pretty sweet"
A bunch of anecdotal tales of pre combat wartime fun. would have been better without Milligan's chops slapping on each sentence
