Publisher's Summary

Angie Martinez is the "Voice of New York". Now, for the first time, she candidly recounts the story of her rise to become an internationally celebrated hip-hop radio icon.

In her current reign at Power 105.1 and for nearly two decades at New York's Hot 97, Angie Martinez has had one of the highest rated radio shows in the country. After working her way up as an intern, she burst on the scene as a young female jock whose on-air "Battle of the Beats" segment broke records and became a platform for emerging artists like a young Jay Z. Angie quickly became known for intimate, high-profile interviews, mediating feuds between artists, and taking on the most controversial issues in hip-hop. At age 25, at the height of the East Coast/West Coast rap war, Angie was summoned by Tupac Shakur for what would be his last no-holds-barred interview - which has never aired in its entirety and which she's never discussed in detail until now.

Angie shares stories from behind the scenes of her most controversial conversations, from onetime presidential hopeful Barack Obama to superstars like Mary J. Blige and Chris Brown, and describes her emotional, bittersweet final days at Hot 97 and the highly publicized move to Power 105.1. She also opens up about her personal life - from her roots in Washington Heights and her formative years being raised by a single mom in Brooklyn to exploring the lessons that shaped her into the woman she is today.

From the Puerto Rican Day Parade to the White House, Angie is universally recognized as a powerful voice in the Latino and hip-hop communities. My Voice gives an inside look at New York City's one-of-a-kind urban radio culture, the changing faces of hip-hop music, and Angie's rise to become the Voice of New York.

It was great to see history being played out. I was a kid when all of this was happening, but I remember all the events she mentioned.

"Well she does have a story to tell..."

I listened to this book because Angie Martinez's role in radio culture and hip hop in undeniable. Angie does have a story to tell and was around when a lot of hip hop tragedy transpired (i.e. 2Pac and Biggie). While I'm happy I gave the story a chance, there were times it seemed boring or uneventful and the could people really me this much act got old, but I'm glad I still gave it a listen. I like Angie Martinez and this book is another accomplishment to add to her success. Good Job Angie!

    Story
    "More than just Hip Hop"

Just buy it! Don't try to trivialize it by putting it in some "Rap, Hip Hop, Urban" only kinda box.
Cause.....it's NOT. It's so much more than that, it's full of truth, love, compassion, grace and understanding. Be open to hear her heartbeat in her story. Okay so maybe you weren't really into Hip Hop then it even now but I believe that she's bring the humanity of the artist to us not just one of those empty "name-droppers" tales. This is a memoir of a Smart as F*ck woman who has the sense to know there are always two sides to every story even when you don't wanna be hear'n it. But she had and still has the balls to look for the heart of the person.
Plus there's some cool as S*hit stories, plus she feels like she's you friend who's just in the industry and takes you along for the ride.
I could keep going but I'm sure I'm going to hit my Max text limit so I'll end with. This book is the SH*T!!
