Publisher's Summary

From the former senior editor of Rolling Stone and author of The Holy or the Broken, called "thoughtful and illuminating" by The New York Times, a new book on the unlikely coming to be of Prince's now legendary album.

Purple Rain is a song, an album, and a film - each one a commercial success and cultural milestone. How did this semiautobiographical musical masterpiece that blurred R&B, pop, dance, and rock sounds come to alter the recording landscape and become an enduring touchstone for successive generations of fans?

Purple Rain is widely considered to be among the most important albums in music history and is often named the best soundtrack of all time. It sold over a million copies in its first week and blasted to number one on the charts, where it would remain for a full six months and eventually sell over 20 million copies worldwide. It spun off three huge hit singles, won Grammys and an Oscar, and took Prince from pop star to legend.

Coinciding with the 30th anniversary year of Purple Rain's release, acclaimed music journalist Alan Light takes a timely look at the making and incredible popularizing of this once seemingly impossible project. With impeccable research and in-depth interviews with people who witnessed Prince's audacious vision becoming a reality, Light reveals how a rising but not yet established artist from the Midwest was able not only to get Purple Rain made but deliver on his promise to conquer the world.

"A Must-Read For Any PRINCE Fan"

As a lifelong PRINCE fan, the book offers insights fans have always wanted to know about "Purple Rain." I purchased the hard copy months ago to add to my collection of PRINCE books. I just never got around to picking it up. Unfortunately, after his death a few weeks ago, it renewed my interest -- so I bought the audiobook. However now bittersweet, it reminded me why I loved him and his mad genius so much -- always focused, different and a trailblazer. If you're a PRINCE fan (even casual), it's a must-read to learn more about one of the world's last iconic/legendary/genius musical artists at his peak -- probably the last.

"Better if you're a solid fan"

Prince (may he rest in peace) was a firm part of my adolescence, and I even saw him in concert in the early 90s, but I haven’t really followed his career since then and I would not call myself a super-fan.

The book was ok, but I think because I am a “just a low-level admirer” I didn’t find it very riveting. Diehard fans would enjoy it much more than I did.

    "I Can't Find the Words"

Since Prince has passed, I didn't think I'd be able to listen to this book. It was the perfect remedy to assist in the healing process. I still can't believe the world of music and those of us that love it so much have lost such a treasured gift, but God does all things well. I will forever have access to my memories of Prince through this audiobook. There are 2 things that I recalled while listening: 1) I miss all of the music I listened to during the 80's and 90's especially when Night Tracks and MTV were the most poplar. I knew about 98% of all of the songs mentioned!! That was fun.. 2) Prince did more to encourage my relationship with God than my Pastor at the time ever could have and I will forever be grateful. If you like Prince even slightly, you won't be diappointed. I love you, Prince and pray that God was pleased with all you learned to do to honor Him. Rest Forever in Peace, o{+->!❤❤❤

    "Downer"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I believe it was six hours or a little over maybe seven hours long I felt that there could've been a little bit more efff on invested with the narration.

What could Alan Light have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I would've started first with the narrator. Then I would've added more meat and potatoes to the audible and the ball as I felt that they gave you just enough that you already know outside of a sentence or two.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator truly did not seem as though he was into doing this that it was more Amy let's just get it done. There is no enthusiasm with narration I'm sorry I tried. The narration is what kills it for me.

Did Let’s Go Crazy inspire you to do anything?

I think just prints in general and some of the things that were in there did inspire me to rethink of things in a different light. More outside the box then the sttepford life type of living

    Any additional comments?

I do not think they did prince justice with the audio , maybe every do we change everything. I enjoyed reading the book better, because my imagination took wind!
