When a group of armed police in an elite unit turn maverick and start to rip off drug dealers at gunpoint, undercover cop Dan "Spider" Shepherd is given his most dangerous mission so far. Shepherd is ordered to infiltrate the tight-knit team, to gain their confidence and, ultimately, to betray them. Facing men with guns is nothing new for the former SAS trooper, but it's the first time he's had to investigate his own. And the job couldn't have come at a worse time for him. As Shepherd finds himself in the firing line, he has to decide exactly where his loyalties lie.

Intriguing, twists, satisfying
The way the different stories were pulled together
The fast packed opening
Taking on the new au pair
Sometimes a tiny bit too sentimental but the rest of the story makes up for it big time.
"A great story"
I listened to this book via Audible.com. The story kept my attention throughout. I listen to audio books as I do my daily walk and listening to this book made my 2hr walks go really quickly. Stephen Leather writes cracker books. So much action, so much intrigue. Highly recommended
"First time listening to this series and narrator.."
Very pleased with this choice. Similar to Jack Reacher and John puller series. Great story line overall
Again having listened to the first in this series I couldn't wait to listen to this book and was not disappointed. This is one book I could not put down, they are addictive "I need the next one asap".
"Another great Stephen Leather novel"
I had read the first Dan Shepherd and really liked it plus it love this author. I had been looking for new book and saw this. The book had a couple of different plot lines which kept it interesting and there were some definite surprises at the end. Download this, you won't regret it.
"Really enjoyable story with good narration"
Fast paced story with a really engaging narrator. I hadn't heard of either the author or the narrator before book 1 of this series but I am a keen fan of both now. I listen to a lot of crime thrillers and they can get a bit obvious, but I particularly enjoy this series, the characters are interesting and the plot is great!
"Leather has done it for me again"
Once again, I am left feeling totally satisfied having listened to one of Leather's audiobooks. Stephen Leather is fast becoming one of my favourite writers; his panache for keeping the reader/listener captivated throughout the entire book is faultless and the "excitement factor" that he manages to inject into his novels are exemplary.
This time, Shepherd is sent undercover to investigate his own kind, and I fast learned that the only thing more dangerous than a criminal with a gun is a bent cop with a gun. This book had me on the edge of my seat more than once, and for that reason alone is worth a recommendation to other audible listeners.
Read this book: you won't regret it.
"Pity about the narrator !"
Another great story from Stephen Leather and the character that is Spider sadly spoilt by the narrator and his ability to make all the characters sound the same.....he's no Paul Thornley one of the best narrators of audiobooks.
Excellent story, very cleverly all tied together at the end. Not so sure on the narration though, dodgy accents that border on the racist at times. Overall worth a listen though
"Dan ( Spider) Shepherd book 2"
Dan goes undercover as a hit man and then as a SO18 firearms officer, investigating fellow officers.
Stephen Leather's story, narrated by Martyn Read, is fast paced with many twists and turns.
Continual references back to his 8 year old son Liam left me frustrated and bored. Get on with the story and stop trying to pull at my heartstrings. It's a dull and ill fitting premise which is a shame as the Dan Shepherd ex SAS undercover cop is a good starting point. Dead wife just about but child, inlaws and juggling child care is too close to the daily mundane for my escapism needs. I feared that this purchase was risky based on how the last tale ended but I foolishly granted the benefit of the doubt. Took me about an hour to give up but give up I now have.
Listened to the first Dan Shepherd a while ago. This is fast paced and keeps your interest from the start - I wanted to listen to it in one session but managed it in 2 days with a cheeky listen at work! . This 57 year old woman was living breathing being an undercover cop! I'm going back for another installment of Dan Shepherd...
as always spider gets his man.....sometimes a little bit ott. You can get lost in the word of a spy come cop come sas...what more do you need?
