"First class entertainment"
Tension so thick at times you can almost taste it! A classic goodies and baddies tale you will not want to put down.
"Excellent 'page turner' as it were"
Excellently read and gripping tale combined to make this a real hit for me - the character voices were superb and I look forward to listening to the next in the series.
"A must read"
This is another one of Stephen Leather's great books can't wait to listen to book 2 in this series. I have to say also that I like the narrator Martyn Read, he really does put you on the scene, hope he narrates book 2.
"Another Stephen leather masterpiece"
The character setting and relationships are much better in the audio version
Showing how shepherd is torn between his often violent job and his family
He brings each character to life in a very believable way
Not really emotional I was however gripped and finished the book very quickly
"But slow in places."
Good book but the narrative of the families could be slow and irritating. Otherwise well written and engaging.
Another Dan Shepherd quality listen
Good story. Well read. Great listen.
Thoroughly enjoyable. Will listen to it again
Although long, i'd listen again, good pacing and interesting story.
The characters were well developed and I felt it was a good introduction to the series.
The narrator made it clear which characters were speaking.
Very intense at times, I was never sure what the outcome would be.
I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
"Fantastic first book. I love Shepherd!"
I really enjoyed listening to this audio book. Dan shepherd as a character is entertaining, gritty, intelligent and humble. I loved the storyline, and found it to be exciting and quite gripping at some points.
Being an undercover cop working in a prison under the guise of a convicted armed robber to me sounded like a must listen, and boy how right I was. This book exceeded all my expectations of an action packed thriller and I would even rank it up there in my top 20 listens category. I was a little unsure before I listened about the narrator, as I am a firm Paul Thornley fan and was certain he was unmatched in narrating as an ex SAS soldier. How wrong wasI! Martyn Reed is a brilliant narrator and I really enjoyed listening to his telling of this story.
A good all rounder, this book pulls no punches. Buy it, listen to it, then 5 star rate it. Guaranteed to be a great listen. 10/10.
gripping story. Narrator transported you right into the story. I'm looking forward to listening to the other books in the series.
"Good story, poor narration"
No. I'm a big fan of Stephen Leather's books featuring 'Dan Shepard', but Martyn Read is no Paul Thornley. Unlike Thornley he fails to give the character the edge and adrenalin-pumping oomph that makes you want to listen longer than you can afford.
Also, and this is perhaps most disappointing, the quality of the recording is also poor - like an enthusiastic amateur at a karaoke night, it just sounds like he had the microphone too close to his mouth.
Different narrator. Has anyone considered Paul Thornley? This is a character he could bring to life.
