Gaiman’s prolific literary catalogue blends genres including science fiction, fantasy, horror, and fairy tales — and his body of work includes books and essays, grapic novels and comics, television and movies, and theatre.

He is a New York Times best-selling author and is listed in the Dictionary of Literary Biography as one of the top ten living post-modern writers. Gaiman’s prolific writing has earned him a cult following and has seen him win dozens of awards including multiple Hugo Awards, Nebula Awards, Eisner Awards, Harvey Awards, the Horror Writers Association’s Bram Stoker Awards, and British Fantasy Awards.

Gaiman’s early career saw him working as a journalist and then on the trailblazing Sandman series (1989-1996) which became the first comic to receive a literary award (the World Fantasy Award for Best Short Story). Normal Mailer praised The Sandman as “a comic strip for intellectuals”.

Gaiman was born on November 10, 1960 in Hampshire, England. He describes his young self as “a feral child who was raised in libraries”, he praises the librarians that instilled in him a love of books, and lists C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Ursula K. LeGuin among the authors whose work he read with fervour. Gaiman is married to performer and author Amanda Palmer (The Art of Asking).
In addition to his novels, short stories, and comics, Neil Gaiman has also written for film, television, and theatre. Gaiman’s television writing credits include two episodes of Doctor Who (The Doctor’s Wife and Nightmare in Silver).

In 2014 Gaiman lent his profile to advocate for the rights of asylum seekers, featuring in a video campaign by the United Nation’s Refugee Agency. The video shows Gaiman in Jordan, at a UN refugee camp, where he meets men, women, and children who’ve fled war-torn Syria.

The Graveyard Book earned Gaiman the Newbery Medal in 2009 (for the most distinguished contribution to children’s literature) and the prestigious Carnegie Medal in 2010. This achievement made Neil Gaiman the first author to win both the Carnegie and Newbery Medals for the same book. Let story time with Gaiman continue – dive into Coraline. Gaiman wrote Coraline in 1991 and at first his editor deemed it unpublishable, which Gaiman says he understood – it was an unusual offering – Coraline is “aimed at both children and adults ... weird, fantastic horror fiction”. It was for this reason that it wasn’t until 2002 that Coraline was finally published. It proved to be a hit – earning rave reviews and winning awards including the British Science Fiction Association Award for short fiction in 2003.

Coraline was such a hit that it was adapted into an animated dark fantasy film in 2009. Now you can rediscover Coraline as an audiobook read by the one and only Dawn French who delivers for you a spirited reading of this splendidly twisted tale – start listening to the Coraline audiobook.
