These amazing texts from a 13th-century Icelandic manuscript are of huge historical, mythological, and literary importance, containing the lion's share of information that survives today about the gods and heroes of pre-Christian Scandinavians, their unique vision of the beginning and end of the world, etc.

Story
In this magickal grimoire, herbalist witch Nicolette Miele immerses listeners in the wisdom and folklore of the 24 Elder Futhark runes as well as their correspondences with deities, astrology, tarot, crystals, and plants. Each chapter begins by discussing the etymology, meanings, mythology, divination, correspondences, and magick of a particular rune and culminates with profiles of several herbs and plants that possess similar magickal energies. Each plant profile delves into the magickal, metaphysical, traditional, and medicinal applications.
Publisher's Summary
Using inquiry and original translations alongside traditional rune poems and sacred art, Wild Soul Runes invites listeners to develop their own wisdom connection with the runes through practice. The book is based on the premise that all of us possess the ability to receive divine information through rune practice. Rather than telling the listener what the runes mean, author Lara Veleda Vesta shares an interactive practice for listeners to discover the unique ways the runes speak to them.
The book covers the history of the runes, both in myth and through the connection with Old European archaeological findings. This history offers evidence for the idea that the runes have a feminine origin, coming from the well of the Norns, the female triple giantesses who represent the fates in Norse myth.
The purpose of Wild Soul Runes is to create a relationship with these beings through ancestral connection, personal gnosis, and ritual practice. Listeners will learn how to:
- Make a rune altar
- Develop a daily ritual practice with the runes
- Honor the Germanic/Anglo Saxon wheel of the year
- Craft a rune set and rune ceremonies for divination

A good exploration of the Old English Futhorc
I enjoyed this book, especially as it went beyond the standard 24 rune Elder Futhark.
It did put the various runic futharks into historical context.
My only criticism is the use of the neo-pagan/wiccan burning times trope as a source of destruction of pagan lore and female witches. That said the author freely admits that her writing is based on her upg inspired by the lore.
This is best for those with some grounding in the historical evidence of runes and the pre-christian cultures that inspired the runes.
