Story
"You can be beautiful, even more beautiful than before." This is the seductive promise of Dr. Nzinga’s clinic, where anyone can get their lips thinned, their skin bleached, and their nose narrowed. A complete demelanization will liberate you from the confines of being born in a Black body - if you can afford it. In this near-future Southern city plagued by fenced-in ghettos and police violence, more and more residents are turning to this experimental medical procedure. Like any father, our narrator just wants the best for his son, Nigel, a biracial boy.

Story
Steve Almond shares the insights gleaned from three decades as a beloved teacher and mentor, and a considerably less-beloved literary rabble rouser. His tone is irreverent. His ideas are iconoclastic. And his approach is stubbornly, radically, empathic. The goal is to explode the well-meaning but misguided myths that hold us back from writing our deepest and most honest work, to awaken the joys of storytelling while also confronting how grueling the process can be.

Publisher's Summary
Then We Came to the End is about how we spend our days and too many of our nights. It is about being away from friends and family, about sharing a stretch of stained carpet with a group of strangers we call colleagues. It is about sitting all morning next to someone you deliberately cross the road to avoid at lunchtime.
Joshua Ferris' fabulous novel is the story of your life, and mine. It is the story of our times.
Critic Reviews
"It's a long time since I've read a novel so painfully funny, or so absurdly true." (Craig Brown, Mail on Sunday)
Very funny, intense and exhilarating...For the first time in fiction, it has truly captured the way we work." (The Times)

Brilliant narration!
This novel captures the ridiculousness of corporate life with great wit and a touch of compassion. The narration is absolutely outstanding - the best I've heard - and brings every character to life perfectly.
