Story
When Matt Ballard was starting out his career, three boys were murdered in the same area, the remote and bleak Gibbet Fen. When the main suspect was killed in a hit-and-run, the killings stopped. And the picture was taken before the murder took place. More photos arrive, relating to the historic murders, as well as intimate pictures of Matt's very secret private life.

Story
In the shadow of the Pentland Hills, a man has been callously struck down in front of his home. Tyre marks suggest it was no accidental hit-and-run. Somebody wanted him dead and as the man fights for every breath, they might still get their wish. Grappling with the demons he thought he could leave behind after months away on enforced leave, D.S. Malkie McCulloch resists pressure from his superiors to pass the case on to the road policing unit, convinced that whoever was behind the wheel will be waiting for the chance to finish the job.

Interesting window into the Balkans conflict.
Not exactly a gripping story but fascinating for its descriptions and insights into the Balkans conflict at the end of the 20th century. Far more character development than is usual in your average crime novel and a complex and intriguing plot. But it is pretty obvious who dunnit by halfway through the book.

Really really dull. Starts well sounds promising but is boring, poor story, dull. Not to the usual standard of VM
