Story
Young Elly's world is shaped by those who inhabit it: her loving but maddeningly distractible parents; a best friend who smells of chips and knows exotic words like 'slag'; an ageing fop who tapdances his way into her home, a Shirley Bassey impersonator who trails close behind; lastly, of course, a rabbit called God. In a childhood peppered with moments both ordinary and extraordinary, Elly's one constant is her brother Joe. Twenty years on, Elly and Joe are fully grown and as close as they ever were. Until, that is, an earth-shattering event that threatens to destroy their bond for ever.

Tragedy struck just three years later when Friedrich took his own life and she was left to raise their family alone. Fantastic life story

Publisher's Summary
"This book draws all the emotions out of you. I went from tears to snorting with laughter. It was both lighthearted and heart breaking, yet it inspires me to live my best life! " (Michelle Cox)
When Hollywood auctioneer Emsley Wilson finds her famous grandmother's diary while cleaning out her New York brownstone, the pages are full of surprises. The first surprise is, the diary isn't her grandmother's. It belongs to Johanna Bonger, Vincent van Gogh's sister-in-law.
Johanna inherited Vincent van Gogh's paintings. They were all she had, and they weren't worth anything. She was a 28-year-old widow with a baby in the 1800s, without any means of supporting herself, living in Paris where she barely spoke the language. Yet she managed to introduce Vincent's legacy to the world.
The inspiration couldn't come at a better time for Emsley. With her business failing, an unexpected love turning up in her life, and family secrets unraveling, can she find answers in the past?

Wonderful story
What a beautiful written story about amazing people. A ordinary women’s persistence, bravery and success. Thank you if it wasn’t for you all of Vincent Van Gogh’s work would have been lost. Highly recommend.

Vincent's Heroine
This novel was both light and tragic. The juxtaposition of the 2 female leads was a delightful contrast between 19th and 21st century women who displayed heroism through their devotion to family.
Beautifully crafted and written.

An amazing research effort to achieve such authenticity
I enjoyed most of the book.. occasionally I felt it moved too slowly and was a bit repetitive (especially from Jo’s perspective) but the blend of eras was very well treated and Jo’s character was very strong and admirable.. what a woman of determination and belief in her husband and her brother-in-law, Vincent!
