Story
Tantra Illuminated takes the listener on a fascinating journey to the very heart of original Tantra: its key teachings, foundational lineages, and transformative practices. Since the West's discovery of Tantra 100 years ago, there has been considerable fascination, speculation, and more than a little misinformation about this spiritual movement. Now, for the first time in the English language, Tantra Illuminated presents an accessible introduction to this sacred tradition that began 1,500 years ago in the far north of India.

Story
In his third book, Tantric philosopher and Oxford scholar Dr. Christopher Wallis calls out the seemingly helpful spiritual platitudes dominating our current culture and demonstrates how these "near-truths" can stand in the way of a more radically free and meaningful life—and ultimately, a deeper spiritual awakening. Rooted in the Asian wisdom traditions, Wallis’s book uncovers why these oft-heard clichés are “near enemies of the truth" that can distract us from real spirituality, and can even cause unnecessary suffering.

Publisher's Summary
One thousand years ago in the valley of Kashmir, a great Tantric master named Ksemaraja wrote his masterpiece: the Pratyabhijna-hrdaya, which means "The Essence of the Recognition Philosophy" - recognition, that is, of oneself as a direct expression of the universal divine Consciousness. Recognition also that this Consciousness is, in truth, all that exists, and that its five fundamental powers of awareness, enjoyment, willing, knowing, and acting are the sacred endowments of every sentient being.
The Pratyabhijna-hrdaya was a concise primer, written to introduce spiritual seekers to the Recognition philosophy in less formally philosophical, more approachable language. What Ksemaraja created turned out to be one of the world's great spiritual masterpieces, breathtaking in its brevity but stunning in its power. It came to be considered equivalent to scripture itself by later generations, because of its undeniable inspiration.
One of the most powerful and revelatory spiritual masterpieces of world history, the Pratyabhijna-hrdaya is one of the primary sources for the study and practice of nondual Tantrik Yoga, and it has never been accurately translated or fully explained until now. Christopher Wallis, author of Tantra Illuminated: The Philosophy, History, and Practice of a Timeless Tradition, expounds the subtleties of this spiritual and philosophical classic.

A masterpiece and great into to Kashmir Shaivism, Nonduality
This is one of my all-time favourite audio books and texts. It really covers the basics of the Nondual teachings through slowly exploring a lesser known text, The Recognition Sutas, within the school of Nondual Kashmir Shaivism. The author reads in a way that is both precise, but not at all dry. It’s a pleasure to listen to, and I found it works very well as a tool for contemplation. It’s explained in contemporary language, which is rare for this genre. Kashmir Shaivism is one of the most sophisticated and all-encompassing Nondual schools to emerge, and given its breadth, the author does justice to the tradition. I highly recommend this for those interested in both contemporary nonduality, and traditional branches, as well as those with a side interest in Yoga, Tantric and Indian philosophy in general.

A Masterpiece of Eastern Spiritualism
We rarely get such a work from both a scholar and a practitioner. This is what that is. Simply brilliant and in a class of it’s own. You will learn and absorb something new with each listen. The translation is superb, and the commentary itself is sublime.
