Story
I'm in the business of creating fairy tales. Theme parks. Production companies. Five-star hotels. Everything could be all mine if I renovated Dreamland. My initial idea of hiring Zahra was good in theory, but then I kissed her. Things spiraled out of control once I texted her using an alias. By the time I realized where I went wrong, it was too late. People like me don't get happy endings. Not when we're destined to ruin them.

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

I eagerly looked forward to getting into a new fantasy and it didn’t let me down. I already have the 2nd book in my library.
I loved it and also thought Liyah did a great job with so many characters to pit her voice to.

loved it!
Book was hard to get into but the accents were fantastic once I got over the idea that accents had to belong somewhere!
A nice self contained story that didn't linger too much anywhere and the pacing was consistent.

Pretty good, more reading care would be good
Reader has effective accents but when reading in her neutral English she mispronounces so many words, sometimes says a different word entirely. Very distracting, but if she sorts that out will be good for other books.

Priory of the Orange Tree 🍊
HERETIC; HERETIC; HERETIC; HERETIC; HERETIC; HERETIC; HERETIC; HERETIC; HERETIC; HERETIC; HERETIC; HERETIC; HERETIC; HERETIC; HERETIC; HERETIC; and random Texan accent at the end takes one out of the story! If I change my mind after 3 more re-reads I will change my review … however I am *NOT* a fan of this narrator bc of all the errors she makes.

Finally an epic fantasy without the man author BS
It was so relaxing and enjoyable to read a book where woman characters were not objectified every time they enter a room or even move slightly. Coupled with excellent representation of queer relationships, normalising of women in protector and leader roles, a rich and intriguing fantasy world and an incredibly versatile narrator, it's a phenomenal read.

Great story
I liked this book but the readers voices were weird. And she read too fast for the most part. I thought I’d accidentally put the speed up to begin with. I also struggled with characters, I felt there lacked character development for most. Having said tat I did enjoy it.

wonderful story! terrible narration.
Just god-awful narration. Usually I get used to a narrator with an off putting voice eventually, but I just could NOT with this reader! Why did half the characters have carribean cartoon-pirate accents? especially the ones who live in a culture inspired by ancient Japan... a great story though.

Complex
It’s worth it, once you understand who is who. Had to re-listen 2 beginning again once I realised who the characters were.

Great story, but narrator was awful
I found some characters really difficult to listen to, to the point where I wanted to fast forward any scenes with them (looking at you, Golden Empress). The characters were all well written, it was the performance that was super annoying. I did have some trouble at the beginning working out who was where, but once I got into it, I really enjoyed the story. Such a shame that the narration let it down.
