From sport's weirdest rules to its most unlikely heroes, via comically large cricket bats, pole-vaulting priests, creative football chants and exploding billiard balls, each chapter of Everything to Play For is brimming with surprising facts and intriguing stories. Even if you've never asked yourself what David Attenborough has to do with yellow tennis balls, why Victorian doctors feared the outbreak of 'bicycle face' or what led ancient Egyptian athletes to have their spleens removed, this book will give you the astonishing answers - and plenty more besides.

Not long from now, in a recognisable yet changed London, Signy and Matthew lead a dull, difficult life. They've only really stayed together for the sake of their six year old son, Jed. But they're surviving, just about. Until the day the technology that runs their world stops working. Unable to use their phones, pay for anything, even open the smart door to their flat, Matthew assumes that this is just a momentary glitch in the computers that now run the world.

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

Story
From out of the clear blue sky, an unknown chunk of rock from the frozen void strikes the Earth with unimaginable force, gouging a wound into the very crust of the planet. Millions die in an instant, and millions more await the end as the looming catastrophe unfolds...Thousands of miles away from the disaster, a call comes in the middle of the night. Families act, and react, and while panic spreads, the world keeps on spinning. Maybe a little slower, and perhaps with a teeny bit more of a tilt, but such things are a mere trifle to the existence of a planet.

Story
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Enjoyable and engaging... hopefully a sequel?
Loved the world building and left me hankering for more. Andrews style and visual descriptions are stunning.
I’ve additionally consumed all 330+ episodes of Fish in chronological order and I’ve enjoyed the building of Andrew.Inc (so to speak). This book was a fantastic capstone to the podcast I’ve obsessively consumed over the course of this COVID lockdown.

HOLY WHATT!!! SO GOOD!!
You'd be mad, as a sci fi fan, not to give this a go. The performance is perfect for starters, but the story itself is friggin awesome and it is beautifully written. if I could give more stars, I would!!

Engaging... And wanting more
I've always loved a female protagonist, well written and not a stereotype, and this very much delivers, the secret driving the narrative is compelling as more parts are unveiled... The situation and results are unique and the only thing I really want is to know what happens next...

Wonderfully read. Pleasure to listen to.
This book gives wonderful precise detail and is almost ‘luscious’ to read. Love the protagonist strong female. Story does not seem fully formed. I hope there is a sequel.

Great story, greatly read.
A really interesting look at the breakdown of society following the earth ceasing to spin and the politic around rebuilding a sustainable life. Enter megalomaniac rulers and evil enforcers of the “machine.” Gemma Whelan absolute knocks it out of the park with her reading of it. All round banger. Bring on a sequel 🙏

Unbelievably captivating, incredibly built world.
I initially bought this book as a fan of the No Such Thing as a Fish podcast, not knowing what to expect.
I bought the book Monday as something to listen to on the drive to work for the next week or two, yet here I sit Wednesday evening, not more than 72 hours after first downloading it, book finished and heart racing.
I haven't been sucked down a rabbit hole like this in a long time.
Murray's world is a simple concept with vast consequences and breathtaking possibilities. I'm craving a sequel just to learn more about the world outside of where the novel is set.
10/10 a sure fire dystopian classic.

Thoroughly enjoyable listen
I picked up this book, like many other readers, not because I’m a fan of the genera so much as the podcast. And also hearing a fellow in a bookshop, who was the most different person to the author (from what I remember from attending a show here in Australia), enthusiastically ask for the book based on friends recommendations.
I was not disappointed. Murray’s book is meticulous in its detained description and explanation of the post apocalyptic world where the earth has stopped spinning and the sunny side is largely ruled by a murderous dictator and who has subdued the population into accepting extensive government control, famine and brutality.
Against this backdrop is Hopper, a brilliant scientist, plucked from her remote job studying ocean currents into a world of intrigue, and violence as she abandons caution to discover the secret that her University tutor was hiding. Along the way there are a series of helpful and endearing characters who have survived in the post apocalyptic England to bring glimpses of hope. And I loved that Hopper is a very real, compassionate and determined lead as is her counterpart on the journey.
I did love the thoroughness and complexity of the world, the plot reads a little more like it was envisaged as a screen play, but I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing.
Very much enjoyed Whelan as the narrator as well, she is h the voice for Hopper and showcases the ability to give voice to an excellent range of characters.
