Story
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Story
Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Great characters and world
My ratings
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Read it
⭐ Don't bother
Story: Average
Characters: Great
World: Great
Keep it short:
I really enjoyed this early on. I thought the main characters and the world were great, and some action scenes kept up the tension leaving me wondering what next. In spite of this though I still dropped off the story and it took me longer to finish than I would have liked. This is still a book I would recommend to read, it deserves to be on your 2019 tbr pile as I do believe it has the potential to build into something good.
For the audiophiles:
John Banks does a solid job. You can tell he has experience, the characters aren't over or under done and the pacing is good. No problems here.
For the cover art judges:
I like this cover, it's artistic style lends to the setting and the blue tones accentuate the mood. Although I will admit while listening I did imagine all the scenes to have blue hues.
