Publisher's Summary
A magnificent, sweeping history in which Rutherfurd captures the essence of the English heartland, from the author of Paris, London and New York.
Few places lie closer to the heart of the nation's heritage than the New Forest. Now, Edward Rutherfurd weaves its history and legends into compelling fiction. From the mysterious killing of King William Rufus, treachery and witchcraft, smuggling and poaching run through this epic tale of well-born ladies, lowly woodsmen, sailors, merchants and Cistercian monks.
The feuds, wars, loyalties and passions of generations reach their climax in a crime that shatters the decorous society of Jane Austen's Bath and whose ramifications continue through the age of the Victorian railway builders to the ecologists of the present day.

Bringing the New Forest to a new audience
The concept is sound. Historical facts woven around fictional characters. Some of the characters were a tad wooden. but i enjoyed it

Brilliantly written history of one of England’s best loved natural areas
I thoroughly recommend this book!. Cleverly written using 900 centuries of local history. I truly didn’t want it to end. It was also wonderful to have a narrator who was able to voice female characters without sounding like a comic female impersonator. Well worth every cent spent.

story of the new forest of england spanning hundreds of years back to king william. follows the stories of family and peoples and their lineage all connected to the location. couple of the tales are a little dull. couple are incredible. his love tales r a bit ehh but overall very enjoyable. will definitely be reading a few more of his. personally i find the snippets of history thrown in and factual details the most interesting part of the book. he has a talent for illuminating the lives of people within that time period. the characters stories could definitely be trimmed down. very unique book
