Story
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Story
Senior journalist Allira is writing a story for Folk magazine when she meets Nora, a nursing home resident with dementia and a doll cradled lovingly in her arms. Bit by bit, Nora reveals details about her younger life as a spirited teenage girl living beneath the Great Western Tiers in Tasmania's heartland, of stitching linings into coffins, of her illicit romance with a charming Polish-German migrant, and of a family torn apart by heartbreak. As the two women form an unlikely friendship, Allira becomes helplessly drawn into the old woman's story.

Brilliant story and great narrator
The story is just wonderful and cleverly weaves together past and present with the timeless themes of what makes us human - love and connection. For those of us who are not especially sentimental, there is nothing corny here!

Pleasant but a bit dull
Audible recommended this book to me based on another I had read and loved. I have no idea why the two were seen as similar. This was a pleasant listen but didn’t ever really engage.

A must to read
Educational and heartwarming. I liked learning more about what a death doula does and at the same time enjoyed getting to know Clover. Really enjoyed the bonus interview at the end with Mikki and Jennifer. has left me with feel good vibes. As a new EOL doula (Aussie) I had a special interest and Mikki did not disappoint in her research.

Love love loved it
A beautiful, winding, thought-provoking novel. We all have to deal with death at some time in our lives and this book is reassuring and poignant. Overall though, it’s a book about life. About the regrets and advice of those who die inspiring us to really live. Thanks Mikki Brammer.
