Story
After seven years of bitter war, the end has come at last for the conflict known infamously as the Horus Heresy. Terra now lies within the Warmaster’s sights, the Throneworld and the seat of his father’s rule. Horus’ desire is nothing less than the death of the Emperor of Mankind and the utter subjugation of the Imperium. He has become the ascendant vessel of Chaos and amassed a terrible army with which to enact his will and vengeance. But the way to the Throne will be hard as the primarch Rogal Dorn, the Praetorian and protector of Terra, marshals the defences.

Publisher's Summary
In the hellish sprawl of Imperial Terra, Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor Erasmus Crowl serves as a stalwart and vigilant protector, for even the Throneworld is not immune to the predations of its enemies. In the course of his Emperor-sworn duty, Crowl becomes embroiled in a dark conspiracy, one that leads all the way to the halls of the Imperial Palace.
As he plunges deeper into the shadowy underbelly of the many palace districts, his investigation attracts the attention of hidden forces, and soon he and his acolyte Spinoza are being hunted - by heretics, xenos, servants of the Dark Powers, or perhaps even rival elements of the Inquisition itself. Soon they discover a terrible truth, one that if allowed to get out could undermine the very fabric of the Imperium itself.

Mystery on Terra
Most importantly you may need to be a fan of Warhammer 40K to enjoy this and to understand the myriad proper nouns and subtle nods at other novels.
If you are a fan, then I think this is a good read. The first of a trilogy written about a lone wolf inquisitor and his newly attached acolyte. Uncovering a mystery surrounding ritual murders on the throneworld itself, this story will take you to the depth of Terra and give you a glimpse into the contrasting strata in society, not just in terms of wealth, but also in terms of agency and knowledge.
Chris Wraight is my personal favourite Black Library author and I feel that his writing is the best for mysteries and intrigue. No wonder he also wrote the Palace Coup novel (Valdor) and Bloodlines. If you enjoyed the more-ness of those two novels then I certainly would advise this book as well.
John Banks gives a great performance and encapsulates the thematic feel of the characters. With a great distinction being made between a grizzled veteran storm trooper captain, a wizened lord inquisitor and the ancient Custodes. I really felt he did a good job with the Custodes, his performance really captured their endless duty, I really felt like they had seen it all before and would see it all again.
Read it, love it and move onto the next book :)
