Money - investing, personal finance, and business decisions - is typically taught as a math-based field, where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do. But in the real world people don’t make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together. In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money.

Story
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Story
Hugh van Cuylenburg was a primary school teacher volunteering in northern India when he had a life-changing realisation: despite the underprivileged community the children were from, they were remarkably positive. By contrast, back in Australia Hugh knew that all too many children struggled with depression, social anxieties and mental illness. His own little sister had been ravaged by anorexia nervosa. How was it that young people he knew at home, who had food, shelter, friends and a loving family, struggled with their mental health, while these kids seemed so contented and resilient?

Trauma and Recovery is revered as the seminal text on understanding trauma survivors. By placing individual experience in a broader political frame, Harvard psychiatrist Judith Herman argues that psychological trauma is inseparable from its social and political context. Drawing on her own research on incest, as well as a vast literature on combat veterans and victims of political terror, she shows surprising parallels between private horrors like child abuse and public horrors like war.

Graphic!
This is brilliant but super graphic. I don't see why it needed to be so graphic (repeating people's exact accounts of their abuse). Could have been a lot shorter without these lengthy accounts. Quite triggering. What about vicarious trauma?

Understand trauma and how it affects a body
Great book. Helped me gain a deeper understanding of my own trauma, how it affected my behaviour, thought patterns and so on. It can be triggering, as there are a lot of descriptions of the trauma, but examples of other people dealing with similar issues make you feel less alone and tools discussed to treat trauma give you hope for a better future.

Resolution of trauma begins with understanding
This wonderfull book is a game changer. In a clear, evidence based manner Dr van der Kolk describes the aetiology, pathophysiology, the psychosocial impact on individuals and the society as a whole. It outlines the approaches to healing and recovery. In my clinical practice I encounter daily people who unbeknown suffer from PTSD. Vast majority has not been involved in war or catastrophes, yet their unrecognised suffering is too often deeply affecting them and their loved ones existence seemingly without hope. I have used this book successfully in bringing the understanding of this common condition to many and thus promote their healing.
