Story
The year 1871. Adelaide Greaves and her young son have found sanctuary in the Australian town of Maiden's Creek, where she works as a postmistress. The rough Victorian goldmining settlement is a hard place for a woman - especially as the other women in town don't know what to make of her - but through force of will and sheer necessity, Adelaide carves out a role. But her past is coming to find her, and the embittered and scarred Confederate soldier Caleb Hunt, in town in search of gold and not without a dark past of his own, might be the only one who can help.

They were transported from 1780s' England, packed like cattle in cargo compartments: scammers and prostitutes, thieves and murderers — doomed to build His Majesty's new colony in Captain Cook's anchorage in Botany Bay. It was a cruel fate even for the toughest of individuals but especially for 15-year-old Jenny Taggart, who was sentenced to lifelong exile for a crime she did not commit.

Story
I never expected to have to uproot my family to go live in my parents’ isolated cottage on Lost Lake. It’s twenty miles to the nearest town, an insignificant speck in endless pine forests. Nobody’s lived here for a decade. Now, I pick up a rusty pail from its nest of autumn leaves and turn to my daughter. Suddenly, I recall how I used to help my own mother pick wild strawberries up here as a little girl. Maybe, this isn’t a punishment. Maybe this place will be the making of our family.

Publisher's Summary
The international best-selling rags-to-riches saga of a convict woman's ambition and courage in colonial Australia. A gripping pause-resister - more than two million copies sold worldwide.
Sara Dane is an 18th-century young Englishwoman, unjustly sentenced and transported to the penal colony of Australia. Follow Sara's struggle to raise herself from the status of a convict to a position of wealth and power.
Sara faces many challenges, from the savage voyage aboard a convict ship to the corruption and prejudice rife in New South Wales. Life in the colony is harsh, and Sara has to contend with natural disasters and convict outbreaks, as well as the snobbery of the high society she wishes to enter.
Sara's life is also influenced in often surprising ways by the men who love her, childhood sweetheart Richard Barwell, ship's officer-turned-landowner Andrew Maclay, Frenchman Louis de Bourget, and the Irish political prisoner Jeremy Hogan.
A compelling historical novel full of adventure, romance, rivalries, tragedies, and triumphs, also broadcast as a popular TV mini-series and radio series.

Beautiful early history I loved it
So many of our early woman could have been the same as Sarah
I love it that the true characters are mentioned
The only irritation is the occasional mispronounced town or river names and I feel for some reason Saharan woul have had a stronger less girly voice
But that’s nit picking it’s a very worthwhile story I love it
