In the shadow of the Pentland Hills, a man has been callously struck down in front of his home. Tyre marks suggest it was no accidental hit-and-run. Somebody wanted him dead and as the man fights for every breath, they might still get their wish. Grappling with the demons he thought he could leave behind after months away on enforced leave, D.S. Malkie McCulloch resists pressure from his superiors to pass the case on to the road policing unit, convinced that whoever was behind the wheel will be waiting for the chance to finish the job.

Story
A weekly newspaper dedicated to the weird and the wonderful (but mostly the weird), The Stranger Times is the go-to publication for the unexplained and inexplicable. At least that's their pitch. The reality is rather less auspicious. Their editor is a drunken, foul-tempered and foul-mouthed husk of a man who thinks little of the publication he edits. His staff are a ragtag group of misfits. And as for the assistant editor...well, that job is a revolving door - and it has just revolved to reveal Hannah Willis, who's got problems of her own.

Great story, pity about the sound affects
I think the story was excellent with spatterings of Scottish humour throughout. Unfortunately the music was dreadful and almost had me turning it off. Sometimes it came into and over the narrator narrating. The story stands alone without the loud and obnoxious sounds between each chapter. I’m going to try another and hope it’s not more of the same.

Great quick read
A great quick detective/journo mystery with a very likeable and snarky main character. Loved the dark and grim humour, loved Tennant’s narration. Look forward to getting into the rest of the Parlabane series.
The music is a bit annoying but it’s worth getting past it.

Great story. Interrupted at irritating intervals by weird, seemingly pointless, musical interludes. Would have been far easier to listen to without them.

Great listen
I read this book years ago. I listened to it recently. It's fantastic. The plot is clever, the characters interesting and it's very funny. The narration is also excellent.
