Story
What is the Rachel incident? When Rachel falls in love with her married professor, Dr. Byrne, her best friend James helps her devise a plan to seduce him. But as the plot becomes increasingly complicated, their friendship is tested by impossible choices and a lie that can't be taken back. Chaotic and brilliantly funny, The Rachel Incident perfectly captures the turmoil of young love.

Story
Mari and Elisabeth have been at the center of each other's lives for years. Close friends since university, they're now drifting through their mid-twenties, working casual jobs and living in run-down share houses. When they meet Jack, a charming academic historian twenty years their senior, they're attracted to the sophisticated, intellectual world in which he seems to move. As the summer gathers heat, Jack is drawn into their lives, and an unconventional relationship—halfway between friendship and love triangle—develops.

Story
I tell myself that Max couldn’t kill anyone. He’s a family man now, different to who he was before. Even so, I should go to the police right away. But I can’t. Because if I do, I’m scared they’ll start to suspect me. How much do I really know about the girl in room 12? And if the truth comes out, how far will I go to protect my precious family?

Story
Deep in Essex and her own thoughts, Sophie had a feeling something was going to happen and then it did. Chris has entered the pub and re-entered her life after Sophie had finally stopped thinking about him and regretting what she'd done. Sophie has a chance at creating a new ending and paying off her emotional debts (if not her financial ones). All she has to do is act exactly like a normal, well-adjusted person and not say any of her inner monologue out loud. If she can suppress her paranoia, pornographic visualisations and lying maybe she'll even end up getting the guy she wants?

Annie is about to become a senior associate at her law firm, Bec has just got engaged, Leo is dating everyone this side of the Yarra, and Penny is just ... waiting. Story
Broadcaster Tracey Spicer had an epiphany when her young son uttered these six words. Suddenly, her life’s work fighting inequality seemed futile. What’s the point in agitating to change the present, if bigotry is being embedded into our futures?

Publisher's Summary
El O'Reilly is exceptionally good at making mistakes. Mistakes like:
- falling in love with the charismatic youth pastor, Mace, while engaged to her high school boyfriend
- breaking up with her fiancé the night before Valentine's Day
- walking out on her family
- dropping out of uni with no plan B
- ghosting her old friends
- kissing her new friends
- sleepless nights with beers and bongs and boys and girls.
But when Mace proposes to someone else, El's world finally breaks. Will she go back to the safe love she's always known, will Mace realise that she's the one, or will El forge her own path into the unknown?
Mistakes and Other Lovers explores the pressure, pain and freedom of being on the cusp of adulthood and realising things aren't what you thought they'd be. That disappointing the people you love (and yourself) is inevitable. That making mistakes might be the best thing you've ever done.
Critic Reviews
'Mistakes and Other Lovers heralds a bold new voice in Australian fiction. With a sharply-observed exploration of the anxieties and freedoms that come when seeking both selfhood and adulthood, Amy Lovat is one to watch.' Hannah Kent
'Amy Lovat is a captivating, evocative and stunning writer. Mistakes and Other Lovers is a spectacular debut with richly painted characters who delight and debauch in the messiness of love and youth.' Sally Hepworth
'Amy Lovat's writing is unflinching, vivid and pulsing with energy and desire. Reading her is like settling in for a juicy chat with your funniest, raunchiest, messiest friend.' Emily Maguire

Absolutely brilliant!
This story gripped me from the beginning and I was so drawn into El’s world that I was sitting on the edge of my seat with my hands over my mouth in the final chapters. It’s nostalgic and funny, yet also makes you squirm and wince as you relive the highs and lows of your early 20s. Brilliant writing and the narrator’s voice and tone suits the vibe and age of the characters. Really loved it!

This was beautifully written and reminded me all too well of my own tumultuous twenties. Can’t wait to hear what Amy writes next!

True to twenties
I loved the writing style and tone but at times found the multi levels stories hard to follow.
The location description is true, the characters are developed the ending is a bit anticlimactic but perhaps that’s the intention in terms of indecisiveness.
