Publisher's Summary

The New York Times best-selling origin story of the Master Chief - part of the expanded universe based on the award-winning video game series Halo!

The 26th century. Humanity has expanded beyond Earth’s system to hundreds of planets that colonists now call home. But the United Earth Government and the United Nations Space Command is struggling to control this vast empire. After exhausting all strategies to keep seething colonial insurrections from exploding into a full-blown interplanetary civil war, the UNSC has one last hope. At the Office of Naval Intelligence, Dr. Catherine Halsey has been hard at work on a top-secret program that could bring an end to the conflict...and it starts with 75 children, among them a six-year-old boy named John. And Halsey could never guess that this child will eventually become the final hope against an even greater peril engulfing the galaxy - the inexorable confrontation with a theocratic military alliance of alien races known as the Covenant.

This is the electrifying origin story of Spartan John-117 - the Master Chief - and of his legendary, unstoppable heroism in leading the resistance against humanity’s possible extinction.

Read this before you listen!

Great novel, offering in-depth backstory into the Halo Universe.
It is worth noting, however, that there is a noted recurring typo in this version of the novel: every reference to the year 2542 should read 2552.
And yes, James’ left-arm salute is also an acknowledged mistake [you’ll know it when you hear it].
Another thing to keep in mind throughout the story—especially towards the end—is that this novel was released right around when Halo CE was launched, over 20 years ago.
Since then, the Halo Universe has expanded significantly, and there are now some parts of this book that don’t line up with what is considered canon.
If you’re a fan, you may raise an eyebrow every so often, so my advice is to remember that this was the story as of beginning of the franchise; either forget what you know about Halo going in—or simply ignore the parts which don’t add up to where Halo is now—and enjoy the novel for what it is.
Coming back to this book after so many years offered amazing nostalgia—and was even better listening to someone else read it for me as I went about my day[/s]!
Next up, The Flood!

Worth the read

I really loved the narrator albeit he does pronounce a few words (such as mjolnir) incorrectly.

Also, for some reason they chose to narrate the 2010 reprint of the book which has mistskes (which were apparently rectified in the 'definitive' editions of the first 3 books), such as 2552 being incorrectly stated as 2542, and other small issues like misnumbered Spartan group sizes etc.

Thrilling action adventure

Phenomenal story and well delivered. This is the closest to behind the scenes of the halo universe and the origin story. This is the main time line which also works in conjunction with the game Fall Of Reach. (Story was first) it is nice seeing the side of Keys, Cortana, Halsey, Mendez and Johnson. Even if you aren’t a fan of the games, or want to dip your toes in the universe for the first time this is great for any sci-fi fan or just for good adventure.

Cuts off a few words

The only problem with it is that some words are cut at the beginning of them

Halo an origin story

Loved this book, currently replaying the games after years. This book gives you an in-depth backstory into how the Spartans where created and gives further character depth to known characters such as Captian Keyes. This is a must listen for any Halo fans.
