Publisher's Summary
Winner of the ITV Crime Thriller Award Best Read 2014
Winner of the Scottish Crime Novel of the Year 2014
When Detective Sime Mackenzie boards a light aircraft at Montreal's St. Hubert airfield, he does so without looking back. For Sime, the 850 mile journey ahead represents an opportunity to escape the bitter blend of loneliness and regret that has come to characterise his life in the city.
Travelling as part of an eight-officer investigation team, Sime's destination lies in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Only two kilometres wide and three long, Entry Island is home to a population of around 130 inhabitants - the wealthiest of which has just been discovered murdered in his home.
The investigation itself appears little more than a formality. The evidence points to a crime of passion, with the victim's wife the vengeful culprit. But for Sime the investigation is turned on its head when he comes face to face with the prime suspect and is convinced that he knows her - even though they have never met.
Haunted by this certainty, his insomnia becomes punctuated by dreams of a distant past on a Scottish island 3,000 miles away. Dreams in which the widow plays a leading role. Sime's conviction becomes an obsession. And in spite of mounting evidence of her guilt, he finds himself convinced of her innocence, leading to a conflict between the professional duty he must fulfil and the personal destiny that awaits him.

Very Satisfying
This in a clever telling of two stories linked through time with intriguing but flawed characters linking the two. The resolving of multiple mysteries over musts of time is very satisfying.

Loved It
I love how Peter May weaves the past into the present with his intriguing murder mysteries; always captivating this one is no exception. In fact, it’s unfair to call his stories murder mysteries, they are much more than that. Peter Forbes works miracles with his narration, you will believe a man can be a multitude. This one is not to be missed.

Interesting history, but the plot was unbelievable
I found the scenes describing life in the Hebrides in the 19th century full of interest, and the descriptions of the Clearances informative if shocking. However the device of the diary was a bit unrealistic, and the correspondence between modern and past Kirsty quite unbelievable. Although Peter Forbes is always brilliant, the constant switch between the thick French accents and the Canadian accents was a little annoying. Maybe that is just Quebec, but it detracted from the story.
This book falls short of the standard set by the Lewis Trilogy.

Not really a "murder mystery" book
This book is different from other Peter May books I've read, if you are looking for a complex murder mystery, this is not. But, a beautifully written book about roots, history and the lives we live today came from the struggles and almost savage times of the past. I am not Scottish, but am an immigrant to a new country, I felt every word in the book so beautifully written.
